Worked on several cars recently that have the exhaust manifold heat shields left off. None of them reports any trouble with this. Has anyone done this ?? I can understand why its being done as its blooming difficult to get them off and difficult to get them back on, the majority that I see have bodged bolts etc. And a car in now I have to hellicoil two bolt holes in the head as some emptyhead plonker has rammed metric (and too short) bolts in, obviously having lost the two aukward ones, stripping the threads (if only I could get my hands round his neck!) 
Would some exhaust wrap be just as good or not necessary??
