Yep, definitely seen some worse for wear pins, thinking perhaps as preload slackens the bearings may be encouraged to move around slightly.

I don't know, have got a few oldies in the cellar as far as i know, might see if there any bad ones there for a picture.

im not saying it never happens but is very rare in my experience and is noticeable when fitting new bearing ,and would only remove bottom pin if that was the case and much easier with housing in a vice than on the axle

I had this last year on my 96 300TDi, it was the king pin (swivel bearings) that were shot.

Well made a start on this today and what a barsteward of a job. Taken 8 hours just to strip it down

. Was hoping to have it finished today. But had to order a new wheel bearing kit too as one of the bearings is bent;

This is what I was greeted with when I took the flange off;

Plenty of leakage there then

Got down to the ball in the end. Managed to remove 4 bolts but had to grind the other 3 off!

No wonder it leaked;

The light was fading though so its time to call it a day and start to reassemble in the morning

Also, how do I tighten the track rod end up without it spinning?

what worked for me to tighten the ball joint nut was to get a prybar and put one end under axel casing and across the top of the track rod and press down as you tighten the nut. might be a good idea to get a friend to help with using the prybar or the spanner as trying to do both together can be a pain.

It's pretty normal to have swivel grease in/around the wheel bearings

Better than not having in fact as it lubricates the drive splines, without lube they dry fret and wear away quickly

Regards doing up a trackrod end, simply get a long bar and put some weight on it to press the taper into the knuckle and it will grip sufficiently to do the nut up

Around 1.5kg on track rod mounting hole with spring balance, without swivel seal fitted

However, I set mine as tight as I can without the bearings feeling unhappy

This allows for bedding in aswell, but mainly more tension = less death wobble

Set them both equal by the way.

Oh by the way, FTC1616 is something I always remove, and replace the lower bolts with regular hex head M8 set screws, and spring washers.

Absolutely no idea what all these harmonic dampers do but I can't make out any difference without!

Mine is currently around 2.2 with no shims. Is that ok?

There is a very good video on you tube called 'landrover swivel replacement' it's in two parts it's a fitter showing a female defender owner how to carry out the replacement in great detail. It's about 1 hour 20 mins long in total but I found it to be excellent!

You want it nice and tight but this should be with a few shims.

I can make 10kg with shims sometimes.

Are you using new bearings by the way?

If not that may explain why you haven't needed any shims

New bearings will lock up solid without shims.

Yes new bearings. Just watched that video and it says around 4kg. Do I need to torque it up before I do the setting?
