Hi
Just got myself a 1995 discovery. I have noticed its leaking quite alot of oil from the steeing box, seems to be coming from the joint on the top cover. I bought a set of seals from LR direct (there must be about 15!). Is it possible to undo the lock nut, remove the 4 bolts, and unscrew the top cover (being careful not to turn the adjuster) and change the top seal?
Thanks
Gary
PS Ive got a feeling I might be asking quite a few questions on here.....

you do undo nut with 19mm spanner while holding adjuster with 6mm allen key they undo bolts (15mm)and then wind cap off with adjuster ,replace seal and wind cap back on fit bolts and adjust box which must be set central ,either with pin through rear of drop arm into box or by counting turns on steering wheel ,you rock input shaft with one hand while you wind in screw till all backlash has gone

On my TD5 the steering box was leaking from here. I put some Lucas power steering leak fixer in and it was dry for about 3 years until I sold the car.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks for the replies.
Andy, was yours leaking much? mine seems to leak even without the engine running! I have considered the stop leak, but then again seeing as I just got the car, it might already have that in it!!

Mine was leaking quite a bit. Enough to cause a wet patch on the ground from memory. The Stopleak is red and thick so you might be able to tell if it's in there.
I kept topping up with the bottle and was onto the 2nd bottle when the leak stopped totally. You could also remove some old oil with a syringe of some sort to make room for the stopleak.

I think there may have been a slight improvement in the steering feel as well with the thicker oil. It's about a fiver a bottle and can be got from Ebay likely.

You can use a bit of brake fluid ;) it swells the seals. Did it on mine and its worked wonders :D

Good to see another local on here :) (check the link in my sig ;) )

Hi all
I tried the stop leak but its not made any difference. I decided to change the top seal, But I cant shift the 4 bolts on the top of the box. On the 3 I can get at with a socket, I`ve had an 18" breaker bar on, but Im pretty sure the bolts are going to snap before they undo!
I dont think they are a left handed thread
Has anyone been able to loosen these okay?

They are right-hand threaded, which means they are normal and undo anticlockwise.

Hows that steering box doing now?

i did the brake fluid trick and it worked for about 3 months, then bought the seals and put them in the cubby. Then bought lucas stop leak and, well , the leak stopped so the seals are still in the cubby for when i have the time and motivation to do it.
