I have a 1998 3 door TDI XS Disco, which is in pretty good nick, although I have a niggling leak problem that I can't get to the bottom of. There is water getting in to to the front passenger footwell area that occurs whern it rains. I have taken the carpet up, cur out the vibro foam, dried that out and checked everything out. I know it is rain water coming in somewhere as it pools when it has been left standing during the rain. Does anyone have any ideas?? I can't see anything obvious where it is coming in and I need to sort this before putting the carpet and bits back. HELP!!!

The thing to do is strip out the floor felt and when its raining look and see...Other than that, I found that water was dripping through the bolts that the supports of the dash to the inner wing that could be seen after the passenger kick panel was removed and my need a torch, a dab of mastic over the bolts heads sorted that.
Also water leaking through the sunroof can find it's way down to the footwells.

Found with mine, the rain water was getting in between the windscreen and the channel at the side of the screen, it's covered by the rubber surrounding the screen on the outside, injected black silicon into the channel where it dissapears into the bulkhead/wing at the bottom of the screen, cured the problem, took me ages to find it 95 300tdi

Have you taken the trim panel off that is on the side of the passenger footwell? I have a rust hole in the inner wing behind mine....one day I will take the outer wing off and weld it up and then may be I will have a dry floor

Remove the trim on the A panel and below the glovebox. Check for any water lines on the bodywork.
If you can't find anything try putting some old newspapers down instead of the carpet. The newspaper will soak up any water and show the point at which a leak arrives at your floor. Useful for checking your car after a shower etc.
Use a hose on a fine spray, or a watering can, and play this over the area of the lower windscreen.
Check inside for any leaks.
Repeat for the higher edges of the windscreen, then try the sun roof area.

My leak into the passenger footwell was via a leaking seam in the trough under the bonnet where the wipers are.
Same rusty water line as in Discool's answer, but you have to remove the glove box and then cut the sound deadening to be able to see the upper panels and the seams.

anyone else found it best just to rip the spongy crap out altogether?

Seems like it's only good for speeding up the inevitable rusting process
