Am I right in thinking that if a layshaft bearing has gone on my series 3 2.5 petrol that I would not be able to go into reverse ? . I have no way to get the gearbox out and no money to pay for it to be done . I also have a exhaust , indicator stalk and footwell to repair so I'm thinking about what to do first, I can't find any similar gearbox noises on line so im hoping it's something else .

This is the thing , I can go into reverse and all gears quite easily , its just the noise , I had come to the conclusion that it was the layshaft bearing , however a lot of people state that if this is the case reverse gear will not be possible , is this the case because if it is I can tick that off the list of possible solutions

if it was a layshaft bearing it would be noisy in all gears except 4th, rev idler gear has straight teeth so does its corresponding teeth on l/s and synchro hub these are prone to pitting and parts coming off, a poor lay shaft bearing wouldnt effect selecting reverse unless it was so bad 1st 2nd and 3rd would be undriveable

Ok , I have removed the rear prop and it's no longer making the noise , however there is a new problem !Ok , I've had a short-lived success here , I took the rear prop off and the noise has gone so I'm really grateful ,( slight noise but probably front shaft , same noise but very low level noise ), there is now a further issues that must be related , I went around the block without issue with prop off in high gear , front wheels moving , I was so happy I thought id treat myself to another circuit however now it won't move , front prop turns only in low , however if I put it in gear and lift the clutch it keeps running ! I try to push the red lever forward and it's as if it doesn't realise it's in gear and the prop doesn't turn , I know it doesn't turn because I've got the floor out , Any ideas please ? Short lived joy ! FWH are locked because I've already done a circuit

Have you pushed yellow knob down?
If so the 4wd shaft is sticking in the casing or you have lost a halfshaft.

Yeah , I've pushed it down , it does stay down and pops back up when I pull the red lever back , would that still happen if what your suggesting has happened ?
Thanksx

Yeah , I've sort of come to the same conclusion , strange thing is that it drove 5 mins before , I'll try and degunk it in the morning , the yellow lever does seem to be going down and holding though but I'm hoping that that's all it is. I've got the tunnel out at the moment so that probably doesn't help

I have a small update (it's cold outside! ) the yellow plunger does go down and stay , the red stick goes forward ,central and back and is still attached to the rod which it is clearly pushing in and out , I am going to take off the front cover to see if the other 2 rods are moving , just 1 question , is it ok the move 4wd selectors with this cover off ? , I could do without a handful of rods and springs , also what should I be looking for? Does the fact that the red and yellow levers seem to be doing what they should give any clues to my issue ? Thanks

its only a weather cover you can operate the levers with it off, with yellow knob down it should compress the long coil spring around the yellow knob rod so when red lever is pulled fully back it can spring back up it will only pop up when red lever is fully back

If your taking the cover off here is some info on where the rods should be in the different positions.
