Landrover Original Parts Or Not?

I aproach the "Font of Knowledge!" and ask:-

This new, well old (1992), Defender 110 of mine should I use Land Rover Original parts or will any secondary brand do? e.g. fuel filter, oil filter air filter, etc.

Good quality pattern parts are fine, and MUCH cheaper.

I.e. i paid Land Rover nearly £40 for an exhaust hanger, cos no-one i knew at the time could help me. It arrived, and it was a bolt, a u bolt, some rubber bushes and a drilled piece of steel. Great.

Britpart are usually not very good either, their parts don't last to be careful, but otherwise most parts you get from most sites like paddocks are just as good.
 
I always use Britpart (apart from gaskets and oil filters) and I can definitely tell a massive difference in quality between these and the original parts. A year back I changed my fuel tank, replacing it with a britpart tank and the paint pressure washed straight off. The metal it's constructed from is also slightly thinner and the seams aren't welded as well. Even a britpart thermostat is about half the weight of the original land rover part, but all in all I haven't experienced any running or performance problems.

The only thing that I don't like is the fact that they aren't going to last as long as the original parts. They are a lot, lot cheaper though (as Boydy said), and a lot of the products are to a similar standard.

you also have to consider what you use your vehicle for,if like me you do a lot of offroading then things are gonna break and wear out a lot quicker than if you are popping the kids to school,so cost soon becomes an issue if you are replacing parts,and lr genuine parts certainly are a lot dearer.lr wanted £120 +vat for a water pump for my 90,i got a non genuine one for £40 inc vat
 
I would NOT use genuine parts, or britpart if it can be avoided, for example, the sh*tpart filter has no non return valve in it, it may seem a good deal but your engine will suffer on every start because all the oil will drain out of the system, meaning on every start its got to pump a full load of oil into the engine (noticeable on the OIL PRES. light extinguish time) But at the same time I would not pay 4-6 for a LR stamped one, because its a coopers filter with their stamp on it - so buy the coopers for £1.90.

As Pos said a lot of the sh*tpart stuff is also thinner gauge metal, paint job it’s terrible, made of softer steel.

Sh*tpart lift pump is a tinny little pressed together thing, the manual prime arm on them gets cut into by the edges of the main arm so the manual prime function fails. I got a Quinton Hazel replacement for not a lot more and MUCH cheaper than the LR original even although, YOU GUESSED IT, it’s the one LR use!
 
Just out of interest, is there actually any other brand that has the same kind of parts stock as britpart, but which is of far better quality and of a lower price than LR? Even my ****part fuel filter is starting to corrode and I'm sick of their "flimsy" products. They're all I know of though!

For service items, coopers, fram, hundreds, cos they are all standard parts

For other bits, try bearmach. I just fitted a bearmach steering UJ from my local indie, seems really well made.
Dayco make good timing belts
Hardy Spicer make good transmittion parts, like UJ's etc
Paddocks sell quite a few of these, there really are hundreds of options if you look though. Even a local motor factor should stock/get in most parts for a good price an all.

Said that, ive gotta fit some britpart radius arm bushes tomorrow... :(

Where you been POS?

See if you shop from Craddocks, on the whole there stuff its not britpart, the majority of the stuff paddocks sells will be. I usually ask them when I order (I always call orders in for this reason), and if they don't know I won't buy it and try somewhere else.

I use my local motor factors for certain things like lift pumps, master clutch cylinders, he works out at about £6 more, but I always end up with good parts, and P&P from Cr/Paddocks usually brings it up to about the same price if bought on its own anyway.
