I have just taken my landrover freelander to a 4x4 specialist after a series of banging noises started coming from beneath the car. I posted the problem on this forum and was told it was a problem with the IRD.
After the garage have taken a look he confirmed the IRD is the cause of the problem. He has quoted me £1800 for the job which includes;
£1050 replacement IRD,
£300 for a 'damper' which i havnt been able to associate with the problem, or even find what it is!
£the rest for labour.
I was also told on this forum that the VCU is a cause of the damage to the IRD and yet he told me he was 'happy to leave the VCU as it is', would the VCU need to be replaced for a job like this to even be worth getting done or am i going to get the exact same problem 6 months down the line?
Does this price seem fair for the job and what exactly is this 'damper' which needs replaceing. He also skipped around the bush when i asked if the IRD was new though im assuming he is going to be using a reconditioned one with my old one as exchange.
Any help with the cost of this job/parts and what the mysterious damper is would be greatly appreciated, hate feeling like ive been robbed!
Cheers in advance, Paul

I would say the damper he is talking about is probably the vcu & that IRD sounds a bit expensive, labour sounds expensive, from your estimates i would say labour was about £500 , even at £100/ hr this is not a 5 hour job !!

that is what i assumed about the damper/VCU however when i asked him about the VCU he said he was happy to leave the VCU and test it when the drivetrain was reassembled, which then had me lost as i had also assumed the damper was the VCU but looks like it isnt :\

There isn't really anything else that could be described as a damper ! It can also be tested very easily on or off the car whatever the state of the transmission !

How much do you think a job like this should roughly cost, assuming that reconditioned parts were being used, which i think is the case. Meaning a replacement IRD, VCU and labour. Cheers

I would say you would be looking at about 3-4hrs work, I would guess about £50/hr is a fair independent price
so:

£150-£200 labour
£850 IRD
£350 VCU
£90 for a couple of vcu support bearings if needed
£25 consumables, oil etc

Give or take a few quid !!

What are the actual symptons on the vehicle ?

Hi can somebody tell me the symptoms of a faulty ird. I have a w reg diesel and yesterday whilst driving i got a knocking coming from under the car. On looking i noticed the front propshaft gaitor was shredded and oil/ grease splattered all round it. When you drive now theres no clonking at very low speed either in a straight line or on full lock. Pick up speed and it starts the clonking. It also clonks when freewheeling . Any ideas people thanks
