Stolen Land Rover Bonnet - 8 February 2011
I have just discovered that the bonnet to my Land Rover Defender 2007 model had been stolen.
It was parked along the driveway next to my house, in Rainham, Essex
I think that it was stolen to order as it would not be worth anything in scrap value and if the thief tried to sell it on Ebay, would be stupid!
I am gutted and as a Land Rover owner for over 35 years, I have never had anything stolen before! The vehicle is my pride and joy.
I suppose that I am lucky in that the complete vehicle wasn’t stolen, which is often the case! (I refer to the article in Issue 13 of the December issue of the LRO Magazine
The colour of the bonnet is Keswick Green, from a 110 Double Cab with tilt model.
There is evidence that the thief / thieves put their hand through the grill and tugged at the release cable to the bonnet catch, and then all they needed to do was to lift up and unhinge the bonnet and remove!
I would have assumed that the bonnet release mechanism would have been improved on the new Land Rover Defender models, but it appears not – so it can happen again and again!
Short of bolting a hasp and lock directly to the bonnet (making it look unsightly), can anyone suggest how I can improve the security to the bonnet?
If anyone has any information or has been offered a cheap bonnet for a 2007 Defender model, then please will you contact me or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
In the meantime, my vehicle will be repaired through my insurance company.
Best wishes
