Hi all i know this has been asked many times but again i am struggling to find a definitive answer.

The car is a land rover discovery 2 4.0 v8 2000year

Recommended are ngk platinum plugs PFR6N-11 and i believe there is a platinum champion equivalent.

But I would like to know can an ngk bpr6es be used instead? is it just the service interval that is shorter by not using a platinum plug or is it true that platinum plugs put a strain on the ignition leads or coils.

Any help would be much appreciated
All the best Matt

You have to remember that the engine is still basically a 1954 Buick pushrod v8 - nothing clever ....
NGK BPR6ES plugs are better in the respect that they run a smaller gap and need a much lower voltage to fire them. This gives the coils and leads a much easier life, especially in damp weather.A reliable spark is better than a massive spark, misfires play havoc with fuel trims, especially when run on LPG which often isnt as accurately controlled as the petrol side.
They also need changing a bit more often so dont end up with seized threads which have been known to strip on removing the plugs for the first time at the stupidly long 72k service interval...

eightinavee thankyou so much, you sound like a man with the same thinking as me, yes basically a 1954 Buick pushrod v8 this is very true!
I was thinking to go for the bpr6es as like you say yes you have to replace them sooner but they are alot cheaper and it gets round the issue of seizing up and like you say a reliable ignition system is i think always a good thing.
my ratrod has a 3.5 buick Ahhmm i mean rover v8 in it and that runs bpr6es
Thanks matt :)

Champion, my RRc left the factory with them and over the following 10 years of dealer servicing Champion were fitted.
My disco left the factory with Champion and remained using them till this year, now running on new NGK BPR6ES at around £14 from Euro Car Parts.

Bottom line is....I've found no difference between the two manufacturers. :D:D
