Hullo folks, I'm looking for a Land Rover to use as my daily, but I've never had one before. Just sold my motorbike so I'm scouring for sale ads, EBay etc.

But ... I like the look of the Series models, although I'm wondering if they'd be practical for 30 miles every day to work and back? No motorway or anything, just single carriageways and country lanes.

Are they expensive to run? Anything particular to look or look out for?

Sorry to bombard with questions on only my second post. I'd appreciate any advice you could offer though.

as much as I hate to say it a disco would be better fer commuiting but watch out or the fooker will fall apart from rust underneath you and discos look ****e :D

I would buy a diesel 406 for the daily driver then any land rover you fancy as a toy, put it on classic insurance for £100 or so.
My old Disco did 30 on a run but only 26 around town, the Vitara I have now will do 20mpg but I have a 406 that will do 35-50 depending on traffic, so its worth running both.
My Series will do 20 if you are lucky
Whats your buget?

Are you saying that you own and drive a 406 and the gearbox hasn't exploded yet?:eek::eek:

I think you may have just made history.:p

Its only done 160,000 mils so still a bit of life in it.
Guy who changed my cam belt has a taxi with 300,000 on it and still the original engine and box, I like them and 405s but perhaps I am just mad.

306 and 405 denzels go on forever. It tends to be the suspension that kills them.

406's just have this uncanny knack of blowing the gearboxes up. Virtually every taxi in my neck og the woods was a 406 a few years back. Within a year they all vannished. I musta picked up at least half of em on my truck.:p
