I currently have a Defender 90 NAS replica soft top and its a great car and I cannot see me ever changing it.

However recently I have found myself looking at getting a "project vehicle" and strangely im drawn to the forward control 101. Problem is im not sure on how hard these massive things are to restore let alone drive.

Any advice anyone?

they are indeed a grand beast, easy to work on. you dunt even have to get out the cab to work on the top half of the engine. you main problem would be finding spares. am sure they are availible but not as easy to find as other landies, the price will probably reflect this aswell

Never,ever drive a 101 without wearing a seatbelt.Excellent off road,(even better with the front anti roll bar removed) drift well on roundabouts and top out at about 85mph.Hard to think of a good excuse to buy one but,hell they are good fun.
Find it hard to believe that they say that LR only made just under 3000 of them.The only mods they need are Luminition,a stainless exhaust,fuel tank and full harness seat belts.The long exhaust makes them sound really good.

passed one today funny enough , big loud beast of a thing and the driver was in full office attire , suit , tie etc. looked proper strange.

As easy as a "normal" series 3 really. Everything bolts together and it sits nice and high so you can crawl under it without using a jack (if you're a skinny f***er like me, anyway :p). As yer man Slob sez: the engine sits between the seats so you can sit in the cab and change yer spark plugs. Some spares are not-too-bad coz they're from other machines, but some stuff is unique to the 101 and can be hard to source. Stuff like the brake fluid bottle sitting in the windscreen and going brittle in the sun makes things interesting. Too many things to mention but you either want one or you don't (if you get my drift :))

let alone drive.

A tad easier than a standard LWB series but heavier than a 110. Big V8 injun but the aerodynamics of a housebrick. Having no bonnet in front of you can be a bit unnerving to begin with, but you will get used to it. And it's great for getting out of junctions. Excellent off-road. Some people find it very difficult to get into the cab - try before you buy!

It's nice to find another loon that has bought a project 101!! I just bought a partially burnt out 101 on e-bay with the intention of stripping it completely and rebuilding it nut by nut.

Doesn't appear to be such a good idea now the beers worn off.:eek:
