hope someone can give me some ideas on what to do next with my 1991 200tdi disco with a lack of power. Will start from the beginning. Bought this disco that had been sat outside work for three years, got it through its mot and on the road, but from the first time I drove I thought it to be very sluggish, so done the usual, Changed the filters
Checked for tight brakes and wheel bearings
Checked lift pump
Made sure the pipe from turbo to pump is clear and hole free as well as freeing up waste gate arm, took top of pump off and freed up the throttle pin and turned pump up a bit, checked all boost and fuel pipes and made sure intercooler was clear. At the weekend I'll be cleaning the pipes from the fuel tank to engine as well but I'm not holding my breath.
I have spoken to the previous owner who said he fitted a bigger intercooler and wound the pump up a bit also, and It went like a dream, towing a trailer with a car on at 65-70mph no problem, but will now struggle to to 40-45 flat out up a reasonably short steady hill. Any other ideas of fixes will be greatly appreciated, just don't want the pump to be faulty, will cost more to change that then I paid for the truck, thanks in advance.

I dont think its as simple as that, Im going from memory and I think theres a little link rod inside the pump from the rocker arm to the diaphragm, I cant remember how the manual lever connects to it all though?
I guess what Im getting at is manual lever side might be fine but engine side not.
Worth a search as some of the new pumps are utter carp.
Ive had a few lift pumps die on me, its always the same what little power there is slowly disappears especially at the top end of the rev range.

Other thing to look at is the fuel tank pick up steel elbow pipe corrodes and pulls a small amount of air in.
Plus the fuel sedimentor over the rear axle drivers side, looks like a fuel filter housing, best to bypass it as any attempt to service/repair it will end in it broken as they wont have been touched for the life of the car.

Forgot to add well worth checking the turbo is boosting and the signal pipe from turbo to inj pump is present and intact, I had one come adrift once, almost killed what little power the car had to start with.

I did manage to get the sediment filter off, cleaned and put back on with out any leaks but I know what you mean with the lift pump, might try a new one from a landrover parts supplier, but i would think it would be abit harder to start if that was the issue, starts on the button. all the pipes from the turbo to the pump are fine, had it right off and double checked, it will hold vacuum when I block one end off. I haven't looked at the pipes off the tank though so will have a good look at that, thanks for the reply.

The inj pump has its own internal vane pump, the bosch manual says it only needs an additional external lift pump when over a certain length of fuel pipe etc.

I think I'm gunna get a fresh can of diesel and and put a pipe in the can and feed the pump directly, if it goes fine then I'll work back, but Im going to check the pipes from the tank and fit a new lift pump anyway, thanks for the help

Let us know how you get on with the new lift pump. I'm having the same problems as you and I don't want to be chucking money at parts that don't need replacing, I'll let you be the Guinea pig!:)

tweaking your pump like that when everything isn't right isn't the smartest.

are you pushing out a load of smoke?
does it pull as normal lower end?

hard to tell without a boost gauge, but is the wastegate was stuck open then you'd run with no boost all the time.
also check the lil pipe to the fuel boost is ok

stupid Q but...

has it run on veg oil as this can 'gum' up the feed pipes restricting the feed to & through the filter & into the ip o_O

also, remove the exhaust & try a short drive, silencers can 'soot-up' or the baffles can collapse restricting flow, a much ignored power loss area

ps. think a 'sports' exhaust is cheap as hell from paddocks or the like

Rich. ('91 200tdi on road & '93 200tdi work in progress )

I'm also watching this thread very closely. I have exactly the same problem as you are. And I've done everything identical to you, including replacing the lift pump and injectors refurbished. Neither made any difference. I may also investigate the fuel pipes

Is the lift pump fitted with no spacer between it and the engine block?
Are the pipes connected the right way round on it? Has been done before!

Delphi lift pump isn't a fortune, and probably no bad thing to change if it has been there for donkeys.
Try mixing petrol in the diesel can, about 30% and let it run and pull that through the injector pump, may free up pump internals after the three year lay-up.

Sorry for no replying lately, I tried to run a can of fresh diesel straight to the pump to eliminate pipes, lift pump, air leaks etc, but after driving it with the pump fed directly decided that it was making no difference and still had poor performance, I have also took the injection pump top of and freed the stuck pin, but still no difference ( great video for this posted in this thread) ^^^^ I hadn't thought about taking the exhaust off until it was mentioned on here so will give that a go. The turbo seems fine as it will pump all the boost pipes up when revved, but I haven't yet had a chance to stick a boost gauge on to see what it's actually doing. Thanks for all the replies, has help eliminate some problems and possible problems
