Whilst towing my caravan from essex to oxford on friday i lost 4th and 5th gear .I tried to change gear manualy but to no avail the gear numbers came up on the dash but it did not change gear after the car had cooled for a couple of hours all seemed fine.
Untill the return journey today i only made about 20 miles before it happened again it was a recovery job home as to drive another 100 miles in 3rd gear would have done all sorts of damage.
On arriving home the car drives fine again anybody else had this prob as its a 4.4 i wouldnt of thought the caravan would make any difference but it seems to as with no van behind everything is ok.
The RAC man seemed to think the gearbox oil filter could be the problem any ideas.

have you checked the gearbox fluid level? when was it last changed? was it included in a service?

with the extra load on the car the gearbox will have to work harder to keep it all rolling. the g/b oil will get hotter and if its restricted or theres not enough of it then it wont cope!

first thing is to check level and quality.

i believe it should be redish in colour and seethrough between the fingers(if that makes sense) if its brown and thick, mucky looking then its deffo time to change it. a gearbox service wont go a miss by the sounds of things, and its much cheaper than a replacement box!!!

have a google for the parts. names like island 4x4, craddocks and paddocks should come up as stockist/dealers in parts for everything landrover.

You need to either replace your radiator or flush the transmission oil cooler - but most likely the bottom of the radiator is blocked with sediment.

Esso LT71141 is an amber colour - it looks like thin honey.

The caravan will put more strain on the gearbox and make it run hotter. If there is a problem with the cooling system (for the 'box) or oil is low / in need of a change, then the extra strain will highlight any problems, which may not be obvious under normal conditions.

As has been mentioned, probably either needs a gearbox service, and a check over of the autobox cooling system.
