Hi all

L322 TD6, started to get a flat battery back in late August. Checked charge rate, alternator belt etc all ok. Replaced the FSR and fully charged the battery (120ah) 12 days ago. went to start it today battery was sluggish to the point that it would not turn the engine over.

When I connected the battery after charging, I did get a mild spark at the neg, but put that down to the BCM being energised. Battery was new in May, have I missed any other possible know fault.

Any ideas greatfully accepted.

Also headlamp wipers have been known not to park properly causing constant drain....

Also note to all, when disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, try not to allow sparks where possible!

+ another 1, i wiped my immobiliser ecu when i did that and its was a trailer to the dealer but sparking does point towards a battery drain, could be as simple as interior light on when reconnecting
there are dozens of posts regarding battery drain, final stage resistor ?

i used an optimate 6 on my battery which sorted it out

Thanks all for the replies.

I did think about the zennor diode in the alternator, and wasn't sure if the BCM would cause a spark when connecting as it would have been woken up. I just wanted to make sure that although I have elemenated the cheif suspect, that there wasn't anything else to be considered.

I'm away next week, but will have a good look after I return.

It will not be a zener diode, just a normal blocking diode in the diode pack, they break down and leak current back into the windings.

just took my headlight wiper motors off and both need replacing but interesting that one of them would run continuously even with the ignition off as the teeth had gone and it was like it was permanently trying to find the home position.
probably why they had been disconnected at the plug.
as you say something worth checking

got a replacement pair if you need them ;)

Checked mine, all ok, parking and operating ok. Did get a spark again yesterday when reconnecting, both fuses for radio/sat nav removed prior. Had a look at the alternator to see if it had a plug, but it looks like the cables are bolted so couldn't unplug and do a reconnect test.

Thanks Data, the zennor diode is a blocking diode and should be part of the diode pack so hopefully if this alternator is the same lay out as the old Lucas B series alternator it will be a bolt in fitment.

A zener diode is not a blocking diode and there are no zener diodes in the diode pack and there never have been as far as I'm aware, there is a zener in the regulator, this is used to set the regulated output voltage.

What a rip off !!!

You could of had mine for a bullseye

double buggggger, amazing the amount they charge for what is a very cheap looking part, i didnt have a lot of time to look around, my mate stripped it apart and i found a few second hand ones on egay but thought they would have a similar issue of the gear teeth stripping so carded it along with the rest. that takes me over the £3k mark, not bad for 5 months ownership..........

Just an up date.

Because it takes about 12 days to drain the battery, I think (and I hate to admit this) my wife may have spotted the problem.

I left her sitting in the car in a petrol station and she asked me if the reversing camera monitor should switch off as I had removed the keys and took them with me.

Well in all my previous vehicles the cigarette lighter socket has been ignition based, so while we were away I left it plugged in and 4 hours after locking the car, there it was flashing away on standby.

I'm hoping my Homer Simpson moment  will cure the problem.
