Hi all, I've got a 2004 Range Rover Vogue which has started displaying air susp inactive & is at exit height all the time pretty much since I had the gearbox changed.

I've checked the fuse, disconnected the battery & done the lock to lock reset but the car still low & the message is still there.

I was hoping it was an onboard computer problem but it's not looking like it is to be fair, so my question is how do I now find out whether it's the compressor or the bags that's failed? I'm pretty sure I can change the compressor but that's no good if the bags are split. Any ideas?

A bag with no/little air is malleable, bag filled with air is firm. That's how my split bag was found. Think of the difference between a half inflated airbed and fully inflated. :) Hope that helps.

P.s have you tried raising it back to normal ride height using the button on the dash and if so do all sides rise to same height? A diagnostics tool can read the height each corner is at but little use if all are on the stops.

Thanks! Yes I've tried using the dash button but there's nothing at all happening, no lights nothing which there should be at least one from memory. I'll go have a feel! I never thought of that but now you've said it I know exactly what you mean

No lights? Not even on the height indicator?
You have a hard fault that will need reading and clearing with diagnostics.

No nothing at all on the height indicator, no lights nothing Stupid question but would clearing the fault solve the problem or is it a matter of getting the fault code & then fixing whatever it is? I was hoping to steer clear of a mechanic, I've just paid one a small fortune to replace the gearbox Thanks for your reply though, it's all helpful

That depends....
I make no promises but most air suspension faults are straightforwards. You will be on the path to madness if you try to guess though. There are a lot of pieces you can replace if you do it through trial and error. The diagnostic will point you in the right direction.
Owning a diagnostic should be compulsory for any P38 or L322 owner unless they can prove that are totally minted and are happy to get a mechanic to fix every fault. There WILL be more faults..... That's the fun of it.

There was a post on here recently about intermittent EAS fault, also with no light on dash.It should still be hanging around the first couple of pages. Also maybe another LZer in your area might have diagnostics and be able to help with reset. There are some very helpful and knowledgeabe folk on here but it may take a few hours before they respond, as they have to earn beer tokens during the day. @Saint.V8 is one of the best @wammers and @holidaychicken aren't too bad either ;) There are others but their names evade me at the moment.

I understand totally! Yes getting a diagnostic probably is a good idea, what's a good one to get? Hopefully there's someone near me who can lend me their expertise or at least diagnostic, in exchange for beer tokens of course!

Just out of interest, how were the bags?
Also just seen a Yorkshire area in Regional LZers, take a look to see if anyone is near you.

The rear ones seemed pretty firm I'm not so sure about the front ones, they didn't seem as firm to me but whether it was squashy enough to be leaking I don't know

Ahhh schucks GR **blushing**

I would have two thoughts....

First is depending on the car lift they used, if they lifted on the sill jacking mounts using one of these 4 legged lift thingys that let the wheels dangle, then the height sensors could have gone on to a dirty bit of the internal track causing errors in height readings, this has caused the system to go into fault.

Second is maybe the compressor is tired.....

Really you need to plug it into diagnostics and find out why it is throwing a hissy.

Do you have any lights on the height selection switch at all? As this can indicate a hard fault or soft fault.

I have no lights at all on the height selection rocker switch or the selected height display. Nothing moves it up or down, it just poddles along at exit height.

I don't know how they jacked it up, someone suggested disconnecting the battery & doing the lock to lock reset which I've tried to no avail. I'm reasonably handy with cars and stuff but I'm a bit stumped as to what's wrong. It sounds like I need a diagnostic on it, I've been crawling about under it all day & only really managed to establish things it's not lol

Hmmmm I know the 'establishing things it's not' very well :)

Now, now Ant don't pretend to blush, it'll ruin your street cred. ;) Just accept the compliment as you're too far away for me to buy you a beer for all the help you've given me

I've just looked at the compressor and it looks like it's only been in nearly 4 years, is that a decent length of time for this? It's not a Wabco one though

Gap IID Tool is supposedly the best and their support seems to be second to none. £399
RSW AllComms is good if you have a laptop that you can use, and the guy who writes it is well deserving of the community support. $227
iCarsoft do a unit (i930) that is a code reader/reset tool - none of the fancy extras though. About £110.

Well that's true enough lol

I tell you what getting that bloody spare wheel out turned the air blue on my drive, what a palava that was

I've had it 2 years just about, no real problems at all with it up till now with the gear box. Obviously never had a flat either lol.

I previously had a jeep which was like a money pit, if you think fixing these is dear don't get a grand Cherokee, it's not good & I did a lot myself
