Hi all,

My 2005 RRS is having issues starting on cold mornings I’m told (I’ve been stuck in Saudi Arabia since Dec last year and haven’t even driven it yet). She refused to start the other day but when my wife went back to it later in the day it started first time. This morning was the same but she had to go out so hasn’t tried it again. I know it has an engine heater on it but until I get back to the UK I can’t sort that out. Any suggestions from you experts?

First to check would be condition of battery and are the clamps tight there have been a few lately where the clamp is pinched up tight but not tight on the terminal, also engine earth straps seam to be a problem they seam to corrode quite nicely, easily checked with a jump lead.

Glow plug check, also on this model engine, the diagnostic can read the plugs and its control module.
The plugs can be resistance checked and if the glow plug module has never been changed its not a bad idea to consider changing that also.
All can be accessed with inlet manifold off. ;) what an idiot I am sorry.... Not the engine I first thought... V6 not straight 6....but still does sound like the glow plugs!!

Assume wife/car in the UK?
Sounds like glow plugs knackered, clue is not starting first thing when temp at its lowest.
Search the d3 forum as there is a work around with a reisistor costing pennies.

Simple check is to remove the plastic engine cover then pour hot water over the engine coolant temp sensor (passenger side front of the engine) and see if it starts.

I'm going to change the battery first of all. I'm looking at a Varta Silver 100aH battery. Or should I look at something meatier?

Give battery megastore a ring or get your missus to and they will recommend the biggest battery that will fit.all the p38 owners use the mf31000 from memory. @Mark Piercy is after one since his son @RisforRacingnotReverse got one.

The battery may not solve the start problem? It will help to give more of a chance too start it but it'll need checking out to find the issue.
Don't sell without knowing the problem ;)

I’ll give the new battery a go. I don’t have the time to chase around after a fault on a car I haven’t even driven. I’m home for 4 weeks, 2 of which I will be in isolation. If it doesn’t start it goes. My wife wants to buy it off me and get it fixed.

My wife took me out to the car yesterday (on video messenger) and I listened while she tried to start it. It’s turning over but not firing.
