I have to laugh, because everyone says a 1.8 K is the worse freelander ever. They do have their problems, trust me i know... HGF the lot but it's repaired and running fine again.

But the amount of titles in this forum with the words L series, TD4 and problem are getting more and more!

Someone please tell me now that they are more reliable than the 1.8!!!

HG's......:D:D:D

Cos there were far far more of the L Series and TD4's purchased and still on the road than the 1.8 and V6. So, in pure statistacal terms there are bound to more people asking for help on the dervs than the 1.8s.

Simple mathematics really: visit the websites of companies which specialise in scrapping flanders they're full of 1.8s and V6s. TD4 ownership is fast becoming the majority so it follows that enquiries concerning e.g. Window lift problems, Clutch problems, VCU problems etc etc are going to have the prefix "I have a TD4". Have a look through the archives and see if you can find an actual engine problem with a TD4?

I had a weekend with a TD 4 before I bought my 1st 1.8.

The TD4 is(was) definately the faster engine/vehicle* but at least in Germany it has as many probs as the K-Series - ie bugger all.

*so why did I buy the petrol then? 'cos if it's fast you want you are wasting your time with a Freelander. Or indeed any Land Rover. Fast is an Evo.

TD4 problems,Hmmm - do you have all day ? Injectors, lowside pumps, fuel pressure regs, high pressure pumps, turbos,VNT solenoids, cam sensors, various connector problems around the engine esp fuel rail pressure sensors,EGR valves and boost hoses spring to mind.
L series, fractured injector pipes and broken EDC conductors in the engine loom - not much really.
Do mods to the 1.8 K series and its a good engine - as reliable and cheap as any other.Shame they didnt get off their ass and sort it out earlier.

Yeah, it's a great laugh isn't it........................funny thing is my Td4 doesn't need a new head gasket.

all you need to make a 1.8k freebie faster than a td4 is a decent air intake and a race cat with fast flow exhaust system... proven on a local dual carriageway haha

Running the risk for you to become "third time someones burst my bubble :(" but if you meet a chipped Td4 I guess (I'm afraid) a decent CAI in combination with a race cat won't be enough ....:D:D:D:D

Any engine will have its problems, but no one can argue that the TD4 is unreliable.

To be fair, it wasn't Land Rover's problem. Powertrain built and supplied the engines but the parent company, Rover, we now know was up a canoe without a paddle. Rover wouldn't fund the solution. In the end it was Land Rover (who of course were owned by BMW by this point) who designed and engineered the replacement parts at their own cost, much to the relief of not just their customers, but also those of other car manufacterers who used the Rover K-series engine.

Cheers

Most of my TD4 customers would disagree,a car that wont go is frustrating, annoying etc, etc. And they are not cheap to repair either. The TD6 isnt much better. The L series never gave any trouble and now the K series is reliable.Cant understand why people are slave to German engineering - its no better or worse than any other country.BMW never did LR any favours, pity is that Honda never got a chance to work with LR.

To be honest, that's not a fair sample, is it? That's like a doctor saying everyone is ill, because all I see is poorly patients!

Equally, it can be said that I see the world through rose tinted spectacles, because our TD4 has broken down once in 90,000miles. We needed a new fuel pump, which was £140, I think, and it was a bugger to fit. But at the end of the day, it remains the most reliable car we have ever had. And it gets hammered. I acknowledge that some people aren't so lucky.

coudn't agree more

not the same car i know but VW group cars are pretty ****

PD engines eat camshafts

electrics are poor

just replaced an engine on a taxi at 320k which sounds a lot but the car he had before was a montego (what you laughing at?) 2.0 perkins lump which he sold after it covered 530k without any dramas

german engineering, probably the most overated engineering in the world lol

Vorsprung Durch Technik

this is VAG engineering at its finest

lovely little scores on the lobes that work the unit injectors too

Its a long time since I counted how many individual repeat customers I have, but with garages its about 10 LR indies and 40 other garages inc 1 group of non LR main dealers. The TD4,( And 6 ) are not favourites, the TDI and TD5 have alot more respect. Not particularly my opinion, but what the trade tell me.
