Hello, Can anyone recommend a good Hand Winch and where you bought it from? I fancy keeping one in the back our standard Landy in case we need a little light assistance sometime. I've seen some 'no make' ones online for as little as £10 so I'm a bit dubious that they are any good. No doubt you guys know of some good ones.

Thankyou very much for reading.

no,no ,no and no.Useless.Better off renting a tirfor for a day for the money.
GET A TIRFOR!

Why is that exactly? I met an RAC dude who used one of these. Just for emergencies and just to shift the vehicle a little in recovery. Not like doing a full monty winch revovery.

p.s. Not arguing with you, just want to know why not have one in the back of the landy for emergencies, if you aint got £200 for a Trifor:confused:

I didn't mean as a substitute for a bumper winch, I meant as an emergency accessory to call upon in the event of not having a motorised winch.

cos this will just about pull a landy on flat tarmac.A tirfor to rent from speedy costs similar for a day, so id rather go for that.

thanks guys, I had never seen a tirfor before, and if I had I think I would have liked it even before all these recommendations. many thanks.

so when you rent one for the day..

when your stuck in the middle of nowhere do you ring speedy hire up and ask them to deliver it to you?

or do you hire one verytime you go out?
i see a floor in your plan
dont think speedy will deliver without a decent address, they struggle to get to me wen im on the road or rail working.
Buy outright a tirfor use it forever=great value for money.
Any one want mine?

I have one of them 4 ton puller things.

We have one in the workshop useful as an engine hoist, only 20 quid with a carry case (only the rolson branded ones seem to have the case) and I keep it in the back of the disco. Haven't used it for pulling the disco yet actually, but it would certainly be worth trying in most situations.

Often I find I'm stuck but with just a little movement I'd get out, so I'd stick it on the back end, hit reverse, and keep taking up the slack with the winch. I reckon a rocking motion using the winch to keep edging the vehicle out and you could have a recovery solution.

Needs to be used double line pull most times, which makes for very slow progress.

Tirfor is 10 times the better winch, they're fabulous to use, but would have to buy second hand - and it's a bit of a bugger carrying a (heavy) spool of cable around for it too.

Cheers.
