Hello,
Can someone help please i bought a freelander yesterday after wanting one for years, but when i put full lock on theres a funny knocking sound from by the back wheels ! Could anyone tell me what it could be.

Knocking sound on full lock...
when moving forwards, or backwards?
Where does the noise come from? at the very back, ie rear axle? or nearer to the mid?

thank u for getting back to me! i dont want the man at the garage to think im a stupid girl so would like to sound at least a bit knowledge able ! its when driving forward at the back passenger side, i thought i had bought a bargain fsh 1 owner from new 01 reg, the old man who had it died and his family just wanted rid of it, it was defo the right price but it had been standing for ten months and the back breaks were binding but that seems to have stopped now, nice bike !!! thanks for your help, x

It is likely to be one of three things. All of which are relatively easy/cheap to fix.

1. Rear diff mount(s). This you can do yourself.
2. Rear subframe mount nut sheared. Cheap to fix.
3. VCU bearing shot. This is the most complicated and expensive to fix, but an easy remedy is to remove the prop.

All of the solutions to these probs are well described on here if you do a search.

Good idea to check the VCU as a precaution at the same time.

Change your user CP to shiw where yu are - yu never know, someone might offer to help.
What engine gave yu got?

Sorry to hear about your experience. If it were my money and only one day out of the garage I would take it back - quick, smart - one could cynically suggest that if it is going for a song then there may be a heavy pounds-sterling backing track.

As the chap says - if its only one day out from purchase - take it back - it should be fit for purpose - so get them to fix it.

oh - and make sure they dont just remove the prop. :(.

Thanks all for your help, i bought it off a private seller, but i am aware some garages will try to rip me off, being a woman on my own, so at least now i have a small amount of knowledge, amd wont look like a total idiot. Thanks again, x

its strange but the knocking seems to slow the car down. i dont know much about cars as u can tell, but i do know it needs a new exhaust! i can see that for myself. but its got 12 mths mot so i sort of figured there couldnt be that much wrong with it, its 01 reg 40,000 miles with fsh. x

I removed the entire prop shaft, from where it starts at the front of the car, to the rear diff. This will also remove the VCU, which maybe the root cause of the problem.
You will only have front wheel drive, but if its not an issue leave it like it till you get to the bottom of it.
I only refit my prop for the worse of the winter months.
Good luck.
BTW is it a petrol or diesel engine?
Russ

thanks Russ !! have been to local land rover dealer and he said it is the vcu ! and they are very expensive !! so as a temp measure going to do as you said !! its a 1.8 petrol engine !! dissapointed wanted a landy for ages had a honda crv before. :(
