I dropped the sump today and noticed that there are scuffs on each side the cylinder caps. I'm assuming this is the source of the sound. I seem to have good oil pressure and the compression test, dry and wet provided excellent results. There was bugger all metal in the oil in the pan.

Is this fixed by bottom end bearing shells changes or is it the bearing shells on the cylinder caps?

If it's the cylinder ones I might have to bin the vehicle due to time constraints. I was hoping to poke in some shells on the accessible caps.

I mean the connecting rod caps seemed to have scuffing on them...all of them. i was wondering if this was caused by worn shells on the main bearing caps., ie the main journals, not the ones the connecting rod and piston are connected too.

Does this make sense? the scuffing in on the caps with the bi-hex nut, not the 17mm caps.

I haven't been able to pop one out yet, I re-attached the pan as we are expecting thunder storm, looking at the whole thing, the main ones at each end need the engine out, but the others seem like I would be able to pass the new shell around with a bit of a fiddle.

Have you checked Saints how to in the technical archive. If the mains were worn then you would get a rumble not a knock. If the thrust washers were worn then you would get excessive end float of the crank possibly allowing the side of the big ends to rub on the crank. Is yours manual or auto? I've seen crank float that could be measured with a ruler when the clutch was depressed.

Scuffs might be normal where they have squared of the sides and not finished it properly.
Really need pics.
This is if you mean the the side that faces you and not the bit that faces the crankshaft.

Mines be auto. I couldn't really see anything that they would rub on, so maybe it's just the way they are. I'll take a snap tomorrow. I'll check out Saint's How To. I was looking in the tech archive and must have missed it.

With the stethoscope, the sound did appear to be low down. I was trying to find a video that had sound on Youtube. The good news was that nothing fell off, which is always a bonus and what I usually expect.

Okay, story of my life...cannae get the fecking bolts of the main bearing caps. Is there loktite on 'em or summit?

Here is the pics of the scuffs or finishing grinding or whatever . it looks like it's meant to be like that
