Thought I would update you all.

OK, when I tested the motor I thought it was ferked, so I became disheartened. Along with the thought that the control gear was lost and I had major problems trying to splice the new hook onto the rope I kind of lost heart for a while

Well you can buy a new winch for a couple of hundred quid !!

However, boy found all the control gear in his lockup!

So I took the motor back to the auto spark who showed me how to wire it up and it went spinning splendidly.

So today while waiting for the water board to fix the incoming water main I decided to have another go at finishing the plasma rope.

The main problem was after looping it through itself half a dozen times I could not then get it to sheath into itself for the last couple of foot.

Well persistence and an old tent pole paid off. I managed to get the tail through the centre of the rope ....

... then I tapered off the strands as suggested ...

... then finally I pulled the rope back on itself to finish the job off.

Obviously I hooked it to the 110 and stretched it out initially by hand.

Finally I would the completed article back onto the winch drum by hand, using a rope retainer in the first 7 coils.

So here we have one Warn winch ready to fit. Looks like it will go onto boys D1 instead of the 80" in exchange for a 4000lb winch to fit to that. After all I will probably use the winch for more milder tasks than vehicle recovery.

OK, I have been a bit quiet recently. Spending a lot of time sorting out a house the wife has just inherited pre a major rebuild before we can move in.

The greatest bit is that I will have a decent workshop and will be able to lock all the Landies behind locked doors!

I even have permission to build a garden railway too.

Anyway, One of the jobs was to carry more crud from the house we are still clearing to the tip. Well I was getting tired of the bloomin rear door slamming shut on me so I decided to buy some bits from MUD UK that I have been considering for some time now.

I decided to get the Naketenaga gas strut kit for the rear door of the 110, replacing the useless stay with a nice gas strut

I also got a Tunnel tray for the R380 gearbox pre fitted with another 12v socket and a double USB.

Pre Tray...

... post tray.

As prewarned in the documentation, it's quite a bugger to fit into place if you have an A/C unit in the 'fender. I am NOT looking forward to trying to take the fuse box cover off as its a pig without the tray in place.

Wiring was simply running two sets of decent gauge wire into the battery box where I already had two spare fuse slots in a previously installed fuse box. That also supplies the heated mirrors and the main power supply to the 12S socket.

Only thing is I had forgotten whether the box was wired direct to the battery or via the split charge relays. It is permanent live. OK for the 12V bot I will feed the USB socket off a relay as it has a green LED permanently on. Yes trivial, but a power drain nonetheless. so I whipped the fuse out for now.

OK so thats trivial fettling of the fleet, the next announcment is the impending arrival of my new project. Whilst at a prty the other night SWMBO noticed this sad and sorry we S3 in desperate need of some TLC. She wants me to rebuild it as her RTV trialler.

As you can see it is going to be a major restoration to get it running. It was parked up a few years ago when the "Fuel Tank dropped!"

I wonder why ?

Since then it has been shifted around a bit but as you can see the ravages of time and lack of tender abouse have paid their toll.

Well the first step will be to collect it and get it stored away until after the aforementioned house rebuild.

Besides we need to finish Stutabs RRC, then get the 88" CCV motor constructed from all the bits lying around.

THEN I can start stripping the S3, oooh baby looking forward to it.

I will probably create a build thread to follow its slow reincarnation.

Quite like the look of that series, obviously some major tinworm, but the panels are very straight, and a lot of components look re-usable judging from the pics. Honest and original, not been cut about too much :)

Looking forward to seeing the pics of the rebuild.

Cheers Turboman.

Fortunatly we actually know a lot of its history, it has been owned first by one (a keen LR man) then another of the wifes good Scouting friends.

So they both know that it will be going to a new home that will bring it back to life rather than break it.

That said, I was considering using the chassis as a steep re-learning curve in welding, but after putting my finger through the top of the rail between the tank and hand brake mounting I suspect I may be buying a full new chassis.

One of the big questions is whether I rebuild the 2.25 petrol and put it back in, or whether I squeeze the good 200 TDi in that is currently sitting on the bgarage floor beside the 80".

Its always good to have a spare engine lying around

That said does anyone want an LT77 and tranhsfer box from a D1?

I think s3 of that age have a pretty poor reputation for chassis metal quality, so a new one might be the best option. My mate is a very good welder and fabricator, he completely plated his s3 109 chassis and had it galved. It has been good for ten years now, but it seemed like a lot of aggro to save a grand.

Personally I would stay with the original engine, but I am a classic nut, if your missus wants extra power the Tdi could be good.
