Hi guys, have bought a disco which looks like it has had a change of door lock or ignition barrel, it has one key fob which operates the central locking but the other is a plain key for the ignition. How would i go about getting just the ignition key with a fob? I dont want to carry two car keys around with me for one car!

Cheers

Okay, purchase a key blank that fits the fob, have the blank cut to match the plain ignition key and fit it into the fob.
So locking and unlocking is still remote via the fob, starting is by the new blade fitted into the fob and therefore one key one fob. Then get a spare.
If u need get a plain key cut for the doors to use in an emergency (entering the access code).

You can get cheap kits on ebay which comprise empty fobs with blank blades, mine came with extra microswitches and batteries, two off everything.
But as @discool says, you do need to keep a key that opens the door.
One of my Disco 1s came with a fob and three keys. Nothing surprising there as Disco 1s of my year always had separate fob and key.
But it was only when the battery went flat that I discovered not only did the fob not unlock the car but neither did any of the three keys. Obviously a previous owner had changed the lock barrel and not kept an original key. (Weirdly it did open the fuel flap, but only just).
If you get stuck changing the stuff around, there are threads on this forum about how to do it.
Goodluck.
But I carry two keys for mine as I could not be bothered to get the blade cut!

Before buying blank blades, check with you local key cutter, many won't cut some blade from eBay cos they damage their cutting machine.

Really? Never come across that before!
Then get the key cutter to provide the blank, or get one from LR at great cost.
Or get barrels in both ignition and at least drivers door to match.
Pictures here would help cos if the cut key blade for the ignition can be removed from it's fob, then it could be put in the other fob, maybe. but we'll need to see it to know.

Thanks for your replies guys, all sounds too easy.
These are the only two keys I have for it.

Cheers

I needed a blade cut for our old Rover 75, our local cobbler cum key cutter refused cos I couldn't tell him the maker of the blank, ( it came with the car) next I tried Timpsons, they refused unless I bought the blade off them.

This is a bit surprising but one has to assume that at least have some idea of what they are doing. Never had the problem but then I don't get keys cut very often and. as you say, always let them supply the blank! Wonder what their cutting tools use that cannot cut the metal of the blanks!

The key cutter told me that there had been a number of blanks bought from eBay that had shattered during the cutting process and most key cutters are wary of people who supply their own blanks. Probably poor quality brass or summat. To be honest my local key cutter is rubbish anyway, none of the keys I've had from him work without me doing a bit of filing.
