Key doesn't lock or unlock car manually

1998 2.5 DSE

As title suggests, my key will lock and unlock on pressing the fob buttons, but not when I place the key in the drivers lock and turn it.

Normally this wouldn't be an issue but recently, occasionally when pressing the fob buttons the car doesn't unlock. Once I get into the car, don't ask how, I get the press remote button message when the key is in ignition before I can start the car.

Leaving the car unlocked is not the ideal solution.....

Door card off, linkage has broken or come adrift.

Something wrong with the mechanical mechanism. No electricery is used locking and unlocking drivers door with key.

That must be a first.
I'm surprised they didn't make the bonnet latch electrical.

Suppose you could hold a PP9 in your hand as you pulled the release lever.

Probably have more luck trying to open the car with a bible in one hand and some holy water in the other

Mine had a similar problem. It would unlock with the key, but not lock.

Took the door card off, and the drivers door handle out.

At the back of the key barrel someone had fitted a bit of metal strip. Drilled to screw into the back of the barrel, and with a hole in it for the actuator rod.

Unfortunately the metal was moving when trying to lock, not pulling the actuator rod.

I simply drilled an extra hole and added an extra screw so the metal strip always turned with the barrel.

Locking and unlocking the drivers door with the key is mechanical. If the key will not lock and unlock it. Something is wrong with the mechanical locking mechanism. You don't even need to have a battery on the car to lock and unlock the drivers door with the key.
