My water pump is on its way out and is making quite a noise at the moment. I've ordered a new water pump and i'll have it by tomorrow.

I've read in a few places what replacing the water pump involves but some people seem to contradict each other and to be honest it looks like a right **** of a job to do.

How to fit a new water pump on a k series - MG-Rover.org Forums

I've had a read of the post above, and it mentions removing the cam cover... is this really necessary? Also I don't have a cam locking tool, is this necessary as well or can i make a makeshift one from something/easily get one from halfrauds?

Has anyone done this job themselves before, is it an easy job? Or is the writeup on the above link just making it look like a longer process than it is?

IIRC the cam belt drives the water pump on the K-series engine so you will need to follow the procedure for a cam belt change, this will include removing the cam covers.

The locking tool is needed to lock the two cam wheels together so that you don't 'lose' the cam timing. It maybe possible to make a tool but buying the right tool will be quicker and it will work first time :)

Not seen any twin cam locking tools in Halfords to be honest, but might worth an ask in a big store. Yuor best bet is to start with a motor factor and then go to a dealer. Mine is a Bergen kit that I got off a van that has several twin cam locking tools in it, so not a dedicated Rover item.

Just rang the local landrover dealer which to be honest are a great help, but on this occasion tools aren't something they can order. I have seen a few on ebay but whether they'll get to me before the weekend is a different matter.

Edit: just seen this on mgrover forums. I'll get it at the same time as my water pump as the dealer is only yards away from halfords. http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=293936

Cheers for the replies andy. Might need to use an alternative as i've just rang halfords, apart from the guy not really knowing what i was on about they haven't got any in stock.

I think i'll take the first one, it's a lot cheaper than the second  although the second one does look handy if you're doing this sort of job a lot!

Cheers for the link MHM.

Might sound a daft question, but why does the cam cover need to come off?

I've just watched the following vid but he doesn't go anywhere near the cam cover? ROVER K Series Cambelt Change Video

Not sure if he mentions he's already removed it as i've no sound on my computer at work

And putting the car in 5th, and having a friend push the brake, is that a good enough alternative to the flywheel locking tool?

Cool, the bolt one looks easier to make too. Could you confirm whether the cam cover has to come off? Bit confused about this part.

Its only five 8mm bolts on the top part

You need to acces the tensioner for starters, then reset the timing marks when the belt goes back on (assuming it is not due for renewal) so yes it has to come off,
