Hi Guys,

My DSE refuses to run. I was driving up hill when the revs started to surge associated with loss of road speed, eventually after a few minutes ending up with high engine revs and zero progress.

There was no joy in low ratio or any other gear option, after a few minutes with the engine off the car would drive for maybe five minutes and after several stops I was able to get home.

The next day I drove it a few yards, stopped and left the engine idling for five minutes after which it refused to move again. The gear box oil level is 100mm higher than the top mark and has been since I bought the car over a year ago and it had not reduced.

There are no warning alarm messages showing, can anyone out there tell me what I need to worry about.

John

if manual, sounds like clutch and if auto sounds like autobox

If it's an auto which i suspect, oil level when hot will be over full mark. Check it with oil cold. Sounds like you have lost forward clutch. Does it move in reverse? James is your man for boxes.

I think that your first worry should be what time the bus is to get you to work tomorrow morning.

Might I humbly suggest that you give us a clue where you live? In amongst the banter on here there are some very helpful people and you're going to feel a right tit if it turns out that you live round the corner from one of them.

Oh, and if you ask a question about loss of drive, it might be a good idea to tell us what sort of gearbox you've got.

Apart from all that FANATIC's basically nailed it.

as wammers said if just setting of is a problem clutch pack A easy fix once box out if clutch packs slip there burnt out ,and need replacing before box becomes more seriously damaged ,if caught before a new pack and clean oil will see box right for years

Hi guys, sorry it is a 2.5 DSE 1998 with an auto box, the oil level is high when hot and cold and it will not run forward or backwards when engine has been running for a few minutes.

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming.

John

wont be your clutch packs then cos they will discolour oil ,probably freewheel clutches they can be temperature effected when worn

Thanks James, I'm sure you are right. Please don't be offended but I have reposted this thread using a meaningful title......... just clutching at straws.

As you seem to be the gearbox guru, where do I start looking for a recon replacement/exchange and what should I be looking out for?

When my box died I got a reccon one from Ashcrofts, I changed it myself on the floor. Its not difficult but everyting is heavy took several days.
Follow the instructions in RAVE and you can't go wrong.
As for repairing your old box I haven't a clue......

either look on internet on something like ,find a part,or breakeryard.com for good used one or the same for recon theres a few peple do them out there ,ask on warrenty even on used and check colour of oil if getting used send one with blackish oil back ,you get better price and service through intrnet sites than ringing direct as they know there in competion
