We have the front off the ground, and had the drivers side driveshaft removed. The IRD was up to the engine as far as it would go but when the wheel was turned the prop output wasn't turning, and when the prop output was turned the wheel wasn't turning. But it was at one point before the IRD was pulled right up.

If the rear output pinion is held/fixed and you turn one front wheel the other front wheel should turn the opposite way. If one front wheel is fixed and you turn the other front wheel the rear output pinion should turn.

Thanx Beastie, have considered that many a atime. It didn't turn because I didn't have the other d/s in place.
All done now.

edit:to answer mhm and chaser, the front was completely suspended. The n/s drive shaft was still in the hub, but I hadn't replaced the o/s d/s at the time of posting this panic thread.
I rang a land rover genius, who reckoned that they wouldn't turn eachother till the o/s d/s was connected
