just purchased this off ebay, below is the description the seller placed of the problem

anyone got any idea's its a 1.8 t reg

cheers dean

The story of this freelander is a sad one for me.I bought it two months ago for my wife who loves 4by4s.I gave it a full service and hoped it wont give me trouble. Its been a pressure to drive untill last week when it just cut out without warning.Since it was less than a mile from home i towed it home and made afew checks .at first i thought the timeing was gone, but its okey.

I was adviced to change the coil park which i done yesterday but it wont start. It just crunks, for a moment it sounds like its about to start but wont.Whatever it is got to be very minor. The head gusket is okey coz i checked for compression which is good.It never overheated at all,it just cut out.Its a shame to say its a non runner and will be sold as such.Inside is all clean as can be seen on the photos..

Try these and go for the Viking job...

Depending on what you paid ; check there is an engine, check spark, check fuel, if you've got both then are they happening at the right time? And hurry up before he finds out what is wrong and goes back on the deal.

Stay well away from it. The Head gaskets probably gone and he's bull****ting to make you think it's a simple fix. You'll get it home discover he's unplugged something. When you plug it back in it'll fire up and then you'll discover it's had an HGF.

well
i purchased a write off 54 reg td4 commercial and was going to put the engine and a loom into this thats why i purchased it in the first place but was thinking if its a simple fix, sort it out then sell it and find another one.
this way i'd have a td4 and beat the massive road tax :D

wouldn't dream of keeping a 1.8, dont like spending £££ on fuel or repairs

will have a look at sparks and stuff, was thinking might be fuel pump???

cheers

Dean - Sounds just like my freelander when purchased. Turning over ok, fuel present, but no combustion.

Turned out the head was warped in a banana shape. It was ever so slight, but caused the engine to fail.

Go with the TD4 option - sounds like a great plan and I might be interested in a conversion if my 1.8 ever fails.

Regards,

Steve

hi steve

got the aa out today who recovered it for me, they checked it out and said it wasn't the h/g so thats good.

problem is the bloodly thing is gold not silver as i was told, the parts i have are silver so didnt want to bother spraying but i brought it anyway :D
watch ebay lol

any way the aa said it might be the rota arm so he replaced that then the cap, he never had any leads on him so couldnt do that, but will put some on tomo and see.

the compression was fine

will have a play when i can find the time unless some kind sole out there knows what it is

it sounds like it wants to start but just wont

cheers dean

got it started for about 2 seconds today,

changed the ecu and it went for 2 secs then stopped so changed it back and it done the same

does this give anyone anymore idea's :D

hello

sprayed a bit of easy start but no good
changed the crank sensor but still wont fire up

it sounds like it want to go but just cant

i did notice when turning the key onto pos 2 the c/l on the doors click amnd move slightly

if that put any light onto it :D

If it didn't even fart with easi-start then it has to be the spark.

In the olden days you occasionally got a coil that gave you a spark at the plug but it wasn't strong enough to spark under compression.

Do these things have an engine immobilier built in? If the central locking is moving as you are about to start, it sounds like the immobilier is kicking in and stopping the engine from starting.

Good point.
i have had this problem on an old rover (same system) and the code worked.
Only thing is I'm pretty sure it wouldn't turn over not just not start.

Anyway

If you don't have the code your local dealer will give it to you on proof of ownership No cost from mine who I never use for anything else. Then you just put it in via the ignition key and it switches the imobiliser off till you use the fob again.

If it ran its likely fuel . How about an alternative local feed to the injector pump with a small amount of fuel, just to prove the point?
