Just got a 300tdi :)

Hi all, just picked up a 1996 disco 300tdi for £1020 with 12 months tax and test

A few questions really - it has some oil leaks (naturally) and was wondering if anyone had some obvious places to look? it looks like one is coming from back of engine, at first i thought from head gasket but looking closer I think its dripping down from rocker gasket to head gasket and all down engine? sound plausible?

Also the diffs have some oil running down from the plug - is this because of it being topped up or the seals on the plugs knackered?

I've ordered an EGR delete with intercooler pipe so look forward to getting that on

Did have a funny experience earlier, noticed the cover under passenger side dash was loose so i tapped it back into place, and the hazards came on? I could hear a relay clicking from this green box, unplugged the connectors and alarm went off. Was fiddling for ages then it just stopped and has been fine since. any ideas??

Last question for now - Diff lock. I can feel it engage when I move the lever up and right, down and left, and down and right but nothing up and left, is that right? Also the diff lock light comes on sometimes, but not others, and doesn't always go off straight away - Dodgy connection or TB/Linkage problems?

Diff lock works when you push lever to left whatever position the up and down is in, it only disengages when you stop and sometimes have to reverse a little then it will disengage. This is even though the lever has been moved across to the right it doesn't necessarily go in and out as you move the lever.
Left meaning towards the nearside, right towards the drivers side

park it up overnight ,and check in the mlrning for any oil leaks ,,if there is none on the floor then it means its empty ,

Thanks for the answers so far - any ideas why the diff lock light only works sometimes? I'm pretty sure it is always going in as even with the light off if you turn hard the wheels make that scrubbing noise where the diff lock is making them go faster than they want to?

Also very intrigued to find out if anyone knows why the flashers started going off and central locking stopped working after I tapped the trim behind glove box!

switches are prone to fail and poor connection with wires ,diff lock will only engage once its aligned which isnt always straight away with moving lever

Hazards coming on would have been your alarm. As they flash when it goes off. If you have disturbed the wires It could have been this. Not your hazards there for you wouldn't hear clicking. Should be ok tho.
