Any clues on what Rangie you drive at all???

Chances are the 'box is in Limp Mode and has selected 3rd gear to get you home.

Time to get it on diagnostics and see if there are any codes stored in the 'box ECU....

Check condition and charge of battery and function of Alternator - low volts causes havoc on Rangies....

Oh and PS: Dont forget to tell us which Rangie you drive - it helps!

Yeah sorry some info would help, i was i bit mad when i got in:doh:

It's a 96 2.5 diesel (bmw engine) with a 5 speed manual box
The clutch works fine, starts with the clutch in as soon as i let the clutch out it stalls
The gear stick seems ok, the guy that got us home suggested maybe it was a broken selector rod or something
Just after some possibilities thinking it's going to be expensive to fix

OK - Disregard everything I said then....

No idea on manual boxes...sorry! But does sound like something is a miss somwhere...

If the box stalls the car when you release the clutch, the box is trully knackered me thinks!!....

Can you slip the clutch and get some form of movement?? as this will let you know if the box is totally mashed up inside or not!!

does lever move but box stays in 4th ? the pin on top selector shaft often breaks youd need to drop box down (jujst undo mounts/crossmember and lower using a jack)a bit to remove top selector housing from box to check/fix

I would say yes that describes the problem pretty well
i will have at nosey at it tomorrow if i get chance

Well i've had a good look and this is what i've found
I can select all gears fully except 4th you can hear the selector and gears click in to place in 1st,2nd,3rd,5th and reverse, 4th gear feels if it starts to go in then stops
When i try to pull off nothing happens apart from the engine stalling regardless of how many revs i try it with it doesn't try to move an inch which if it was stuck in 4th you would think that you'll be able to pull away
Underneath is covered in red gearbox oil, never noticed a leak before
So this leaves me to think that something has broke, jammed in the box
A quick couple of questions
Is there anything in the transfer box that could be at fault?
There are 2 pipes that run from the gearbox/transfer box to the from and connect to the rad area what are these for?
Stu

there will be two pipes for gear box oil cooler ,its possible front bearing between input shaft and mainshaft has seized locking the 2 together ,theres not much else that would give symptoms as you lastly described
