I can remember a lot of those projects as, no doubt, can Wammers.

The consensus at BAe, at the time, was that the Harrier was restricted in its operational ability, for lack of support infrastructure. I know that VSTOL cargo planes were were designed at the time. I can also remember the hypersonic jet and Mustard.
 
Ah, good times. Such a pity the industry doesn’t get the chance to explore these areas of the imagination any more. I suppose the nearest thing that I’ve done in terms of pushing the limits has been the early days of JSF. I can’t say I’m thrilled with the prospect of supporting that jet for the rest of my time. But at least it has a bloke sat in it.
