juddering

hi my mate just picked up a 87plate 3.5efi manual classic yesterday very cheap problem is when u go to accelorate it judders and jumps like hell it ticks over lovely tho, bloke he got it off has had ecu checked new patometer any one any ideas thanks

clutch ok will check spark it ticks over sound just when u try to drive just jumps and judders take off slowly not to bad but as soon as u try to accelorate it don't want to know

Whats it like if you just increase engine speed with no load, i.e. foot to floor? If ok then I'd suspect clutch fault, if not fueling.

no load then no problem ticks over lovely ok when u put foot to floor

That'll be clutch then, either thrust bearing or contaminated/worn plates.

If it ticks over ok and responsive to throttle when not under load it will be drive related.

Is there any sign of clutch slipping between gears or on harsh acceleration....try holding on handbrake when pulling away for slip....if it does then plates for sure!

I think quite a few engine problems only show up under load - so surely smooth engine without load doesn't prove drive problems?

I'd expect sound of the engine as you drive would give clue as to whether engine problem or drive - if engine sound smooth and constant with throttle position and independent of juddering etc, then probably is drivetrain problem.
