Hi, i have spare wheel mounted on back door, i want to buy some jerrycan holders, with locks!, anyone got any idear where the best external placement is? Is it possible to mount them on the bonnet?

Its for travelling up through sweden and norway where the fuel stations are few and far between....

Cheers, Mark

you could mount them on the front bumper like some military landies do, but that was s2 so they didn't block the headlamps

i would avoid mounting them on the bnnet as it will limit your vision, another option is making a swing away wheel carrier with a plate to mount the jerrycans on

i think the a-frame will block placement on the front bumper, can remember the series ones, the headlights were in the grill so the cans mounted fine where the headlights are now on a defender...nice thought though..

Why not bonnet mount your spare and then fix the jerry cans to your rear door?

I believe that it is illegal to carry fuel on the bonnet, front and sides of a vehicle here in the UK and most of Western europe.

Storm, do you have a 90 or 110? I took 2 cans to Morocco inside the 90 and they worked fine. I had to open them up in the High Atlas to release pressure but apart from that 1 incident, it was fine.

This year i am hoping (time permitting) to fit a TD5 90 tank into the rear of my 300tdi. which will effectively double (and more) my range. I can also do away with the jerry cans.

As suggested above, you could mount a swingaway wheel carrier and build a platform for 2 cans. I have seen this on an American spec overland vehicle. Also some SA companies do holders which attach to the rear spare wheel.

keep a look out.

hahahahahahahaha :D i have seen them one the N/S with lights/plate moved to. I personally dont think its a good long lasting solution and you would really only get away with one can.

Twin tanks for me :)

Hi,
As GRIFFDOWG says, also I believe our saviour or p*** in the a**, the EU has banned fuel carriers on the side/front of the vehicle and tanks outside the chassis, though there are companies that fit 50ltr side pod tanks under the body of a 110 (I believe a Dutch Guy does a conversion), most reputable LR garages will supply them, but won't fit them as they're outside the chassis.

One 110 I saw had 2 50ltr underside tanks, 1 for water/1 for fuel, a very neat set-up.

the jerry can on the nearside is the steel fuel one and the off side are the plastic water cans, if some one slammed into the rear they would both burst expelling the liquid contents onto the offendeing invaders hot engine which could result in an external combustion of said liquid resulting in large water filled blisters, bright red skin with black patches and a lengthy stay in hospital or even longer stay in the mourge !

personally i think external fuel cans are dangerous and at risk of theft.
