Jap import County Disco 1

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to the forum but I am looking to buy my first Landrover,

I have just been to see a Jap import 1996 300tdi county which looks tatty but is very very solid, both body wise and mechanically.

My question is are there any major differences in spec or points I should be aware off before I agree to buy?

Have tried searching and Googleing prior to posting but not managed to get an answer.

The rust countdown timer will have only begun when it was imported most important thing!

I take it that it's an auto box? Check the gearbox oil. If it's gold then it's not likely to have been flushed since being imported otherwise it's going to be cherry coloured.

I've got one and it's good, but like all discos it has its problems.

By far the most solid Disco I have seen and I've been to look at a few,

Did chuckle the other day when eBay searching Discovery's, one of the related searches at the top of the page was mig welder.

Yes there are differences, the EGR is water cooled which as I found out today is a right pain in the arse if you fitting a snorkel, you have to replace the bottom water pipe.

Also, if its like mine and it has not been in regular use you will need to change all the oils, run it for a few miles (about a thousand) then do the engine and diff oils again, it will get rid of the crud that will be there.

Having said that mine was pretty much rust free it had been in the uk for 6 years.

Oh and this is the offending hose, see the airbox cannot move left when fitting a snorkel. See below, there's the air box with the cooled EGR, a picture of the crud in the hear where the Intercooler goes in and also a general pic of the other pipes around it.

Other than that the ABS can be a pain.

Had one for a few years now and the engine, underneath still in tip top, sure it still has the normal disco problems. One thing I don't get, it too of range and has double sun roofs, but why its got air con . :crazy
