Hi guys, have been looking at Discoverys 300TDis and my work mate who has had one for around a year is selling his. I am very tempted as he is very hands on and he has maintained the vehicle very well. Also, it is a Jap import and is not rusty!!

He knows his cars and does his own work, so I’d buy it without giving it a thought, however it is a Jap import and I have read loads of things such as:

The EGR setup is different and includes cooling pipes.
Different Wiring loom and electrics (not worried about radio)
Speedo in KM
Higher Road tax
And someone actually said that they should have high road tax as although it is a 1998 car, it was first registered in the UK at a later date!! Surely this is not true?

Apart from the different spec, I am also not to happy as it is an auto, and I have read that their MPG is very low.

Apart from that, I know the car, I see it every day – it’s nice!!

Any thoughts welcome…very excited cause this might be the one!!

PS: I did read all the other threads but some say that they are the same apart from stickers, others claim that there are quite a few differences???

Find a uk manual, plenty about and you'll worry forever if you buy the import...i dont believe the tax is higher at all, but you obviously want a manual.

The 300tdi is a cracking engine, will run almost forever if you give it enough tlc. Good luck.

Why haven't u asked your mate the questions as he's selling the vehicle "He knows his cars and does his own work".

The EGR part of the exhaust is different but may have been removed by now, radio frequencies are different, security system or the lack of it is different, speedo are KM and MPH as UK spec is MPH and KM and road tax will be the same as a similar disco currently £220.

I have a 200 manual and a 300 auto with edc and find the auto not a lot worse for mph. And on a long steady run on the motorway, where the autobox can stay with the torque converter locked the 300 does much better than the manual. If you are not the sort always in a hurry the auto is a pleasant and relaxing drive.

Thanks guys, I think I can live with the auto. Now it's only the import thing that I am not sure about. Everything else, being fine, would it put you experienced guys off?

Yes. I really dont understand why you are considering this, its clear you don't really want an auto and you'll always have the fact that its an import in the back of your mind.

There's thousands of landys for sale with full UK spec, most at reasonable price.

I have an auto and would never have a manual now - so nice to drive. A bit juicy up and down hilly places (I live in the bloody valleys) but worth the tiny difference between man and auto. As for off roading - auto is just as good.

Some insurance companys are a bit funny with imports so worth checking insurance first...Tony

I'm considering it as it is in great condition, inside and out. Also, it has been well looked after, at least recently, oils changed, timing belt...
Under other circumstances I would not.
Cheers.

I like my Jap import 300tdi auto :) it's not crumbling to dust since it's only been here since 2005. It's the old rate tax. It drinks fuel if you do stop start driving but oh well. Speedo is in mph for me. I love it really. Insurance is 300 or so for my girlfriend who insured it. It's a good buy!

Mine too. Been in the UK since 2006. Purchased with 48k, now 96k. Not rusty like UK models. Insurance has never been a problem. Auto is smooth as silk.

'Ave it.
