Jammed P38 Door lock!!

Hi all, have just joined the forums and I have abit of a door locking problem. The front nearside passenger door on my 1998 P38 DSE has locked in the "superlocked" position! The other doors lock and unlock fine with the keyfob and key but there is no movement at all from the N/S/F passenger door.

Also, since this lock has packed up,the internal locking system, IE, push down the locking button on the drivers door when inside and it locks all doors, has packed up aswell! If I push the button down it only locks the drivers door!

Now the scary bit.......took the car to my local 4x4 specialist who said the F/N/P door lock has siezed and the only way to fix it is to "PRISE THE DOOR OPEN THEN SMASH THE LOCK OFF"!!!!!

PRISE THE DOOR OPEN!!!!...how? Crowbar? Smash the lock off!!

Not happy with that, I took it to a LR main dealer who unbelievably said the same!

I cant believe that that is the only way to address this problem so I wondered if anyone from here has had the same fault and how it was dealt with.

It depends what they meant by 'prise door open'. You will need to prise the door card away from the door a little.

I would look at Door Lock Failure: Getting the Door Open (4.0/4.6/p38A)

You WILL need a new door latch though.

Hi Wills, thanks for the reply, I did a forum search and soon found out it is not an uncommon problem!! I checked out the link you posted, I will try tripping it first by puttting the window down etc.

Can the door trim really be removed with the door locked shut and the passenger seat still in the way? Has anyone here actually managed to do it?

The other postings seem to say that if the passenger lock has packed up then to expect the drivers door locking mechanism to pack up some time soon as well!!

Would love to hear from any member who has actually experienced and solved this same problem.

I solved this problem for only 10 euro and aprox. 4 time !
And you open passenger door WITHOUT warzone in your door!

I am not good to english, but very good to russian I hope you can understand my way to solve this problem...
with this construction this problem come never back.

Here's a good tip from a LR tech.
Remove rear door and then you've access to the latch receiver. Cut it off and voila you door is open and you didn't destroy the latch.
A latch receiver (the thing that normally stays on the car) cost something as a penny at wreckers
