James's rebuild thread

A good source is westfieldFasteners.co.uk or a2stainless.co.uk

A quick and sometimes cheaper source on ebay is aboltfromtheblue (ebay shop) but I've had some "interesting" shaped bolt come from them, e.g:

If you want technical info on threads, have a look here: (Maryland Metrics). Also having a copy of Zeus is fairly handy.

Thanks Alm.

I have one of the bolt packs from A2 stainless.

The thing I don't understand is that I think the nuts for the shock hangers are M16s, but they have a finer thread than the M16s I have!

Sounds like it's a 1.5mm fine pitch, so search for M16x1.5 nuts. Aerotights will be a good option here if you can get em in that spec -just don't reuse them, what with the plastic deformation and all that!!!

The alternative is that it is a 5/8 thread with either 11 or 18 TPI - but if it's a new part, most likely to be metric, plus I thought LR made efforts to standardise threads in 'fenders....? My Lightweight had UNC, UNF, Metric Fine and Coarse as well as the odd Whitworth thread; it was a bloody nightmare.

Managed to get some stuff done today, front axle has been stripped down. Just need to paint it all now and order a few more parts.

The bearings for the swivels seem ok, is it worth changing them while it is all in pieces?

Got some stuff ready to paint, started pushing out some bushes, but managed to explode the bench vice, so I'm sure I am going to be in trouble next time I go up to the farm...

Got the transfer box ready for the swap, decided to go for a rebuilt transfer box from Syncro in the end, should be ready to collect this week.

How much pad is left on here? I don't know how much they have when new.

Only one seal per swivel. My retaining rings were beyond help too.

Just wondering, James. How far past your 3G budget have you gone?

Up to about £3800 now, got another £100ish of bearings, ball joints and clips, but that should be it fingers crossed. It better be, cause I am out of money!

That's pretty good really. It is constantly amazing me how much a few essential odds and ends adds up to

I've stopped adding it up. Although I have kept all the receipts. It's scary :(

How far through are you?

Yeah, they do add up, especially when a ball joint is £30!

I am happy with how much I have spent, and that is with not cheaping out on anything

It's tricky to say as each job often takes 3 to 5 times longer than I expect :D

I have a thread for the build, but I don't add to it regularly enough. Aaron Morris kept asking me to start a thread, which is scary cos he is a talented lad and gets through the work damn fast. Put a bit on earlier today though. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/another-90-rebuild-258257.html
I've gone for a galv chassis and I'm waiting for a galv bulkhead to be delivered from Ashtree. The chassis is rolling with all suspension bits fitted and the engine is in. I'm busy repairing/prepping the body work. I've bought three new doors, rather than repairing the old ones. Actually they were probably past repair. The rear one was virtually non existent :)

Did you just buy your Dinitrol from the usual Amazon/Ebay route?

I got my dinitrol from Ebay. Though if you have a galv chassis do you need it? I have just painted mine with enamel paint, and am going to do the harder wearing areas such as the outriggers with an additional coat of stonechip.

You are further ahead than me, although I am leaving bodywork for another day. Sadly my back door is in the same state as yours.

Yes, jobs do all take longer. I also have a terrible memory, so I have a feeling I am going to struggle to put it back together! Hopefully I have taken enough pics...

ha ha Busted :D

Ha, thought she knew how much I had spent.

Just spent £208 from LRdirect on a bucket load of seals and bearings and stuff.

That should be it I think...

I have bought front bearings, but can't decide whether to change them or not while the discs are off. They are fine so might keep the ones I have bought as a spare for now
