I once used blue rope to lift an engine and box out
Was bloody stupid when I look back.
I've also used tree strops but found they're a bit big (wide)
Seat belts, But getting the knot undone after can be fun.
I've now got a nice little 1 ton lifting strop and a couple of 1 ton D shackles. Which goes through lifting eyes etc nice and easy.
So I'd say you'll be fine with your big ratchet strap. Provided you haven't got the engine swinging on the engine crane for hours. Which I assume you wont anyway :)

Nah, just for putting the engine in, not working on it. The plan would be to put a strap through a hole in the roof and put a beam across. Seeing as it is a brick built arch in the hillside it will easily hold the engine weight.

Then I need to work out how to lift it seeing as I don't have a hoist at all. Maybe hi lift and keep tightening on the ratchet, though no idea how I would lower it again...

I'd offer mine but probably not worth the trip for you.
Their must be somewhere local the rents them? Usually about £35-40 a day.
I rented one on my first engine swap as I couldn't afford to buy one.
Soon realized that it was a silly idea and bought one not long after. Think my rented one actually ended up being £50ish with the delivery on top.
But if you're stuck it gets you out of a hole then rent.
Oh and not sure I'd fancy that with the hi-lift jack. Would possibly work, Just not for me

No, I'm not sure about the idea actually!

There is only a speedyhire near me, and it is a lot more than that (about £90 IIRC), and I am kind of skint at the moment...

Might try the telehandler if I can fit it in my shed

Christ £90
Yes, I'd forgot you had a telehandler. That's got to be the easy option.
Provided you can get it in that is. Or the engine/box and chassis out.

Might be able to do that actually, didn't think about getting it out of the shed :D

The main problem with doing it in the shed is height, as I think with the pallet tines and the arm I may not be able to lift the engine high enough.

But seeing as the engine and gearbox are separate parts, it may be reasonably easy to take them outside.

These nice looking things just got delivered.

TD5 and tdi fuel tank guards. Thought I had bought the steel ones, so the ali ones were a surprise!

No instructions for either, so its going to be fun getting them fitted!

Also not all of the fitting bolts. Bit irritating when you spend a lot of money on guards to have to find and pay for the bolts too.

Another vote here for SGS. They've got loads of lovely stuff very reasonably priced. I had one of their presses last autumn and have had loads of fun.

Finally the engine is back in!!

I got the clutch fitted, then the gearbox and transfer box back on.

Then after fitting the engine and gearbox mounts I started to put it onto the chassis, only for the engine hoist to spray oil everywhere. So I owe the guy I borrowed it off an apology, and will try to fix it. Any suggestions welcome. So I used the telehandler in the end, but had to take everything out of the shed.

Then I fitted the side tank, though had to give it a coat of paint as it was badly rusting already, though it is only a year old. thanks britpart!

Todays question: the speedo cable from my old T/box doesn't fit, it is everso slightly too big. Is this a common issue?

if youve used a t/box that had a transducer fitted you will need to swap speedo drive, the black transducer type have smaller diameter square

Not much to show today, but got lots done.

Today I have:
- fitted the calipers and brake pipes
WP_20141005_14_32_16_Pro_zps0efb5498.jpg

- fitted the transfer box linkages
- fitted the engine mounts
- fitted rear brake pipes
- put on a couple of brackets
- made a mess of fitting the exhaust (see other thread)
- failed fitting new joint to steering arm, dented the pipes feeding the steering box
- started on the fuel pipes and breathers
WP_20141005_17_00_46_Pro_zps35524bcb.jpg

- painted some more stuff
- wrapped wiring loom in trunking
