Jacking under the diff.

i do believe it was a general comment pertaining to the notion of 'jacking' to mean masturbation and as such doing it under a vehicle would be dangerous and should be left to 'fast fit' establishments

I think in the handbook for the Defender it recommends jacking under the axle, including the diff, Any one got their handbook handy to check?

I have also been advised to jack under the diff and this doesn't sit quite right with me either. However, jacking from the axles may make it more difficult to insert axle stands.

Once and for all. Jacking under the diff with a proper jack not an airy fairy Halfrauds one, is standard practice has been for years and if you look at recommened jacking points in RAVE under the diff is one of them. How many times do people need telling.

Hate to pour fuel on the fire, but my copy of RAVE states quite clearly: "Only jack the vehicle using the points shown" Jacking at any other point may cause damage to the vehicle. The points shown are the outer ends of the axle next to the radius arms.

Thats with the poxy bottle jack you get with the car for changing wheels. You would have to be out of your mind to try jacking on the diff with that. Also with the poxy little things you can get from accessory shops. Can't be bothered to look but there are jacking guides in RAVE they show points for two post ramps and jacking two of the positions shown for jacking are under the front and rear diffs. Jacking under the diffs is standard practice and has been since Adam was a lad. But you must use a proper jack so it does not slip off not a toy one.

Have to totally agree with Wammers on this one. There's not a problem provided you use the correct jack.

checked rave, section 1 introduction, chapter 6 jacking. gives recommended jacking points to be axle both sides and in the middle, then states that the provided bottle jack must be used at the sides only, and only in emergencies!

Correect Derek. See you live close to me i BLACKburn. Go to dentist there. Whilst waiting for appointment time i often play spot the white man. Saw three last time in 30 mins. A record.

Isn't that more about the capacity of the jack rather than the strength of the axle i.e. lifting one corner of the car instead of the whole back or front end?

no shape of the jacking cup is suitable for under the axles only.

OK point taken - but it's an issue with the jack, not with the suitability of using the diff as a jacking point with the right jack.

directions from rave,
Raise rear of vehicle
1. Position cup of hydraulic arm under differential
casing.
2. Raise vehicle to enable axle stands to be
installed under left and right hand axle tubes.
3. Lower jack until axle sits securely on axle
stands, remove trolley jack.
4. Before commencing work on underside of
vehicle re-check security of vehicle on stands.
5. Reverse procedure when removing vehicle from
stands.

yeah ive jacked from the diff loads(cheating with a trolley jack without enough reach to lift the axles.)It can take half the weight of the car at least.

And that's exactly why I'm moving up to bonny Scotland (Blairmore near Dunoon). It's where God made the most awsome scenery and then showed he had a sense of humour by populating it with bloody midges! Still, they only usually come out in the evening so I can live with them. Blackburn didn't used to be so bad (like 20 years ago) but of late, it's white flight everywhere. Roll on the time when we've sold up and gone.

if you cant see diff is strong enough to lift car then you shouldnt be doing your own work especially when some one with wammers obvious knowledge says you can,the book is a guide not a bible

You must admit the name Blackburn is appropriate though France is better than Scotland, fewer midges, more sun and for pensioners less tax too

Yeah you said it, everybody driving around on mobiles nobody seems to bother with the law. They park with 7 foot between cars so four cars take up ten places. Mosques are growing like weeds everywhere. A white taxi driver is as rare as the snow leopard. They really have moved in big time.

White Christians will be the "ethnic minority" in the UK in 20 years time. When the Muslims rise up against the Christian oppressors I wonder what the government will say when the likes of Iran come to their aid? Bit like the situation in Libya in reverse.
