seems to me theres a very chopsy attitude on here with some people who dont really try n understand and really help, i dont quite understand it, i only want some help and info to be armed with for when i go back, and reading my posts on this last page im a bit bemused how you seem to think im only interested in the interior , yes i do want one with a nice interior, im not a farmer and want winter comfort, i dont want to,and cant afford to waste 2 grand either,and it will be checked right out, why jump in if all you want to do is get on my back instead of trying to help ???

yes im new here, yes i know nothng about 4x4 or discos, thats why im here for,i only wanted some help,and seems everyone just kind of doesnt see any pros and cons or comprimise or pointing out other suitable ones that may be a better bet , also been looking at the prices/all around for a few weeks now, and there just arnt ones out there that are nice for the sub 1k prices ive seen mentioned, it sounds ridiculous tbh, yes someone may of bought or sold a fantastic one for that price from some mr rich bloke whos just bought a brand new one and got shot to a friend, doesnt mean they are in abundance for the average buyer looking for one , ive said ive taken on board a few times whats been said...yet people still harping on sounding like im totaly dismissive,and do not seem to se any plus points on what looks like a lovely disco , it may well be a crapper underneath, thats what has to be found out...

Good luck with the motor mate, it's looks tidy enough (apart from the obvious:p) but if the garage you're getting it from are half decent they ain't gonna sell you a lemon.

I hope it's alright and once you've had it for a while you'll be as much of a landie nut as most folks on here.

Have fun in the snow and take plenty of piccies .
 
See if you dont shift your arse and buy it, I'm going to pop round gazzump you and then re advertise it for £3k.

Its only 2 grand, if it turns out to be a dog, break it

i want to be a landie nut and learn about them and enjoy the driving and ownership of one, i have time and desire to tinker with cars n maintain them .im up for that !!

if its nice inside and out, i can live with a couple of ton of welding every now n then, its no biggie, however if it is totaly gone...i dojnt want it, but if it was..would i see that from underneath and a good look around ? and would the interior and exterior and engibe be as nice as it is if it was very bad ?? ...thats what im a little confused with , as it looks on inspection like its really been looked after

im absoloutly not buying it if its not deemed a good buy or to be avoided

wel see when we get the boot carpet up etc and someones looked it right over if a lemon the search will go on
 
I don't think the members on here were giving you a hard time pal, they just didn't want you to waste your money. The point was that, with the arch beening like that you can almost garantee, that the either the innner or outer sill, or both for that matter will be rotten. Mine also looked like yours, come mot time i removed the sill cover and found some horrors. Althou it looked solid and straight. I really hope for your sake that she is going to be a good truck for you. Look twice spend once. I got totaly stung with mine, and wouldn't want that to happen to a fellow landy owner. List of work on mine in the last 14 months. Bear in mind apart from the welding i did all the work myself.
new clutch
x4 tyres
pads and discs alround

new innner and outer sill
new n/s rear arch
new rear body mount
new brake vacum pump
new swivle and seals
new water pump
p-gasket
new alty
Complete exhaust system
new wheel bearings
new head gasket set
new turbo

Plus i still have other jobs to do.
I'm trying to put you off, just simply saying that on surface mine looked mint. Now she is pretty much right its the best vehicle i've owned by far, and wouldn't part with it.

Sounds like a typical disco doesn't it? Both of mine have similar lists, maybe not quite that long, but still with niggles to sort out.
 
in 5 years my 200tdi off ebay has had
tyres
rear pads and one caliper
front ns wheel bearing
s/h alternator
thermostat
some brake pipes
welding to cils and rear seat belt mounts
welding suspension bracket to axle

some antifreeze, oil and filters...and odd light bulbs
cam belt was done just before i had it

i dont think any other 160k 20 year old vehicle would have done any better

on the other hand my similar age fourtrak has never needed welding or any major mechanicals.... i just live with keeping an eye on temp and water cos it blows it out
 
If your looking for a motor that has no issues at the age of that one, well a disco is not for you, as it is said on here many times there re places to check for rust, it the same info that I was given and mine is a minter, no leather or air con, ect, but I love it.....

I thought I had checked things well, I brought a 300TDi R reg in August, JUst notice that the bottom rear of my wheel areches had holes in.....:eek::eek:, then looked closer, it was the rear mud Flap Brackets that had rotted, £50ish for part.

I had 12 months MOT when I brought the motor in August,
since then I have had
an alternator - 2nd Hand £50
Set of Break Pads front and rear £40, inc fitting kits
Diff lock Seized -5 hours of freeing up
Water Pump - £30

That just a short list, all works I have done myself.

Think everyone on here will say if your not into getting the spanner out dotn buy a Landrover.

If you like the motor then buy it, as long as the advice is followed that the guys have given you then you'll be ok, but its a landrover, and D1's do rust.
And owning a Landrover costs money, and the to do list is always growing.
 
thanks lads, of course i knwo one had to be maintained and looked after, i own a 1986 ford escort xr3, and a 1990 bmw e30...both over 20 years old and both models are renowned rust traps/money pits and have to be looked after,have common rust issues etc ...im no stranger to it or under any illusions or having to spend on a car or do work on it myself-which im no expert but il try and enjoy and learn ! i just want to have the right starting base for a disco, its very involved it seems but im up for that ,as like my bmw etc i think a disco for its aggro and faults at times..will be great to own and a pleasure to drive and enjoy, wont it ?? its about the smile on the face

like the posts above show, any second hand car is a gamble..sometimes you can gte lucky and have a few years of driving with not a great outlay, sometimes not , its just luck i suppose along with how you drive it and maintain and look after it, which is soemthing i always do with cars/anything buy

not a lot i can do right now in all this snow, which has bought me time..although even more it makes me wish i had one outside and can go out having some fun in it and feel unstoppable

Ooooh I can beat the list - but fairy muff as mine only cost £300 nicker

The one Polstas looking at is same inside as mine, lovely interior.
One thing to be wary if is the EDC gubbins, and make sure the imobiliser works - caused nowt but problems with mine..

Did I mention the nice interior? :p
 
hey landies.. just she of 2 years and....
welding on both cills bout £600
rear wheel arch was about £70 to get patched
water pump £35
new discs/pads £100
cylinderhead gasker £415
glowpugs £40
various oils/filters etc

so in two years I've spent more that I paid for the car... but I wouldnt be without it

hello lads "wouldnt be without it" ...this is what i was talking about to a member via pm...

im not under any illusions, which people seem to think i am ? i have a 1886 xr3,and a 1990 bmw, both the same sounding as discos..rust can be a big problem, regular maintence etc, i spend many hours tinkering,doing as much as i can to mine to im prove and look after them down at my lock up,im no expert and a good learner, read forums,ask advice etc, and do as much as i can myself

the bmw..i bought 12 months ago for 2k, and since then spent god knows how mnay afternoons working on it, replacing lots of little things, cleaning maintaning etc,and improving, many hours on forums,and going here there to get bits, hours..its a hobby for me aswell as a car, i only like old cars...old cars need this i understand that, ive spent 2 grand on the beamer in 12 months aswell ti improve it,and make it good for years to come, i clean it twice a aweek and get "your always cleaning this" comments..yet when im driving it,people see it, i always get "thats a lovely car, look how clean it is" etc.. you get in what you put out and i look after that car and it doesnt let me down, and i wouldnt be without it !!

jsut really want to get a nice starting base for a disco,for 2k it appears there might have to be comprimise here n there..its weighing everything up,and thinking well that ,that ,that is all good, it needs that but thats no drama, ...i want solid tho !! will i find one that has it all ??? i really hope once checked out this is as nice solid wise as it is shell and condition wise ,it might turn out to be a cracker, i might end up wlaking away and being thankful,and finding another, wel see !!

but ...NO ONE KNOWS HOW BAD THE RUST IS AS OF YET !! :rolleyes: 1 pic of a rusty arch thats being replaced,when the other was fine, everyone seems to be repetitive, im only after some help and info, pleasee dont post if you just want to have a dig or go on , no one cares about the old ford or bmw ??? ....maybe not, but sokme people are droning on and on about how discos need money and love spent on them like i havnt got a clue and im some sort of idiot who drives around in 2008 mondeo oblivious to rust and work on cars

the internet and forums are there to help people , newbies ask repetitive questions or same threads popping up, if your not the type to be of helpfula ssistance, then leave the ones that are to it, so hopefully them new members can buy and avoid the right cars, where you not a newbie once ?? did you once buy a 4x4 not having a clue about them but wanted one ??? ... give me a break
 
just out of interest, as ive not got a scooby doo...

how much would a very nice heated seat full leather interior cost including all the door cards n handles and everything ? and a mint headlining etc ? ..should you buy a solid but shabby interior one ?? just so i have an idea

ie the green jap import. would need a new interior at some point, alloy wheels with tyres,roof and bonnet may come up ok with a buff,but very faded n need new paint maybe,rough cost ??

i mention the interior..coz a mint interior,shell,lovely paint and panels,and a nice engine...does go some way in to weighing up a little bit of welding, same as way youd have to weigh up a solid one, that needed panel and paint work..which also costs money

also, feel free to post up any discos around the hampshire area, or anyone know of any nice ones for sale ? i jjust dearly want to make the right purchase here and get a disco il love and enjoy
