Hi, I've got a 300TDI disco that's mechanically perfect-ish and the chassis is sound, I've looked into hybriding it at some point in the probably distant future but IVA puts me off.

Asked the DVLNI (I'm in NI) about it and it would need IVAed if I modified the chassis, but what if I didn't, can it be done? The body outriggers I've figured out how to avoid chopping them off to replace them with defender ones, just a few large box- section adapters.

The rear crossmember I'm a bit stuck on, don't know if the DVLNI would let me weld on a defender crossmember behind the original discovery one (I noticed everyone ends up closer to 90 overhang rather than 110 overhang, I'd rather a shorter 110 than a longer 90 if that makes sense. And I can't think of a way to add on a suitable crossmember without welding onto the original chassis.

If its gonna end up needing an IVA then so be it I'll just wait longer and build it to their spec. Or longranger tray-back cab on the disco shell and a 130 Hcpu tub on the back :)

Any ideas or comments welcome guys!!!

Will

I looked into this in depth, contacted DVLA etc. definite answer was ANY chassis mods require an IVA and because your vehicle is then using a 'modified' chassis you get a Q plate. It seems different testers interpret it differently though which doesn't help!

Erm, I'd buy a defender! Or you could buy an older vehicle that's been modified and had the log book changed before the new system came in and is legally registered on its original plates as being chopped around and you could do pretty much anything with it. But doesn't help with your disco idea which will be a headache I suspect.

I don't mind if I end up on a Q plate and need an IVA it will just postpone doing it till the disco shell it totally gone and give the whole thing a small overhaul

If the front 1/2 was good I would use the longranger cab kit and make a drop side body or a 130 HCPU body on the back but the front is just as bad as the back

Don't really want a defender as I would still spend loads sorting it out as I want it and a 90 is too short and a 110 is to cumbersome for what i do and hard to find in NI everyone's got a 90 and still needs loads of changes to how I want it.

I like challenging builds, that's 1/2 of it, I'd only start this project once I've fined my current one, a MK2 escort modernised with a 1.8 zetec from a focus and suspension and brakes and bodywork totally rebuilt and improved.

Thanks Will

100 inch suits me perfectly, I'll not be moving the axles or the chassis main structure. Ideally I'd like to lose the 4 inches between the wheel bases of a 110 tub but keep the longer overhang, which would let me keep the entire disco chassis intact and just add on a
2nd rear crossmember

How does everyone else hybrid them then? Don't they cut a section from the front of the tub? How would it not fit over the axle then?

I built one about ten years ago on a range rover. But I cut 7" out of the middle to make it the 93" wheelbase of a 90. It had the out riggers cut off and 90 ones welded on special crossmember made. 2" body lift cos the rear of the chassis is a different shape.
I toyed with the idea of building a 100" but it was easier for me to shorten the chassis than it was to shorten and. Bobtail a 110 rear tub.
It was a B reg 110 hi cap front body. 90 rear tub. RR chassis with 3.5 efi and 4 speed auto. Hi cap front axle. RR rear. Registered as a 110 hicap. I got rid cos it was gonna be very hard to explain its existence or I'd have to iva it. Or as may have been done change its identity? Or it may not be on the road any more who knows?

Really love how 100s look, but definitely will make mine with a longer overhang if not a full 110 rear overhang. Doric 4x4 is the one which made me decide I wanted to build one. Even figured out the final looks. Series III 109 van tub, doors, windscreen, wings and grill, defender bonnet (stage one style) all finished in Marine blue and limestone (think that's the colour names)

If you need more inspiration for an 100 inch the was a TV programme called "a 4x4 is born" you might find it on u-tube very good watching. It didnt go into enough detail on a lot of points but very informative on lots of points.
Malc.

I watched a few episodes on discovery not that long ago, it's the reason I started to think about doing it to my discovery, however I wouldnt have the money to do an extensive rebuild like mark did. And mine would be basically standard discovery underneath not all competition stuff like mark did.

Thanks guys any comments are welcome
