I have a 2.5 dshe 2001. Following threads on the forum, the issue that developed over the weekend, which was cold cranking. I changed the seep hoses on the injectors which solved the problem.
Now while looking in the engine bay (i've only had the car 2 weeks) I noticed a disconnected pump and filter assembly - it sits back right in the engine bay mounted on the bulk head. Whats if for ? I haven't noticed anything not working - headlight washer ? I await the guru's replies.

This is a small vacuum pump for the EGR system I believe....

It has been known to increase MPG and performace (marginal at best) is to disconnect the EGR system with a blanking piece and disconnect the pump.

Maybe yours has been disconnected for this reason....if it has, I believe it is now an MOT requirement for it to work if it was originally fitted.
 
Ok thats great, now if the sub assembly were not to be on the car at MOT time would they know it should be on the car in the first place, or will it affect emissions significantly. Injector cleaner in a nearly empty tank followed by a decent thrash usually deals with the emmisions issue.
On a previous defender I removed the EGR,and fitted an alli sport intercooler, then chipped it - made it fly !
 
You can get EGR manifold that looks like the real thing, but is instead blanked off inside...

During an MOT the tester I believe is not allowed to remove anything to check, so if it looks like it is there, then he/she ticks a box....

How knowledgable tester are to know if it should be fitted or not when faced with a particular vehicle is questionable....the presence of an MAF and pump on the Diesel model will let a Land Rover knowledgable tester know it should be fitted....else who would know??
 
Splendid, having chatted to a mate who owns his own Garage and workshop the other day. He was moaning that the Government have allowed them no more additional time to do the new MOT's so I am guessing things will slip, he also said that anyone who could come up with a timed relay to turn off air bag and ABS lights within the prescribed time would make a small fortune. Where would one get such a 'ghost' blanking plate ?
 
Interesting, bit shiny though. I have a blanking end left from the spill pipe kit. I will fit this over the valve inlet to blank it and then push the vaacum hose over the top of it so it looks right. Job done. Thanks for the pointers. It's much easier to find stuff in the manuals when you know what it is called !

The vacuum pump is on the front of the engine. The disconnected unit is the EGR modulator valve. With it disconnected the EGR will not work. It maybe disconnceted because of malfunction. If it is faulty and the EGR is open all the time you will get a serious power loss.

Oops...my bad....I knew it was for the EGR system, I assumed (now wrongly) it was the vacuum pump and filter...

Right, the pipe with a blue line on which would go to the manifold has a bolt in the end of it. I know it's no drag racer but I have no issues with power. I have not checked to see if the egr pipe has been blanked.

No need to blank the EGR pipe, if the vacuum has been removed the valve should be stuck in the closed position by spring pressure:)
 
I suppose im lucky I dont have all that crap stuck and bolted on to my engine, happy days for me less to go wrong!!
