Hi all,

Just got another 300Tdi the other day. The head gasket has gone but as it had 6 months tax and test and was in a generally good condition i decided to take the plunge.

I am a novice when it comes to repairing these but i will give owt a go.

When i start the car, the engine seems to shake from side to side and the expansion tank is bubbling right from the word 'go'

If i take the cap off it you can see the coolant bubbling pretty much like when you take the lid of a boiling kettle. You can also see the fumes rising from the bottle.

I am in no doubt that the head gasket has gone but i have never seen one like this so i am wondering, before i get my hands dirty, what extent do you think the damage is? Do you think a simple change of gasket is needed or something more:confused:

Is there oil in the water ? , untill you get the head off it , you just dont no .... it could need a new head, it may just need a gasket , it may have a cracked block , its all ifs buts and maybe.

After 5 months the Disco is finally up an running.

Head off and it was clear that the gasket had gone. Sent the head away to be skimmed and pressure tested. Was a little warped but sorted in the skimming.

Head back on and ran like a bag of spanners, no power and very lumpy. Diagnosis was that it was running on three cylinders.

Started with the easy stuff first. Sedimentor bypassed, new fuel filter, bleed system still lumpy. Checked Injectors for leaks and sent for testing. came back fine. Checked valve clearences again, seemed fine. Then started to worry it could be a piston.

Anyway I checked valve clearences again and hey presto car running smooth and vibration free.

P Gasket and new water pump fitted along with new rear light and prop donut. EGR removed and fuel pumped increased slightly and everything now fantastic.

Two more jobs to do. Need a couple of patches put on the sills and bottom of drivers A pillar and rear wheel arch and then all finished.

what is this "all finished" you speak of?????????????????????????

It is not a term i understand in the context of land Rovers, sex yes, land rovers no ;)

When i say all finished i mean, erm, my list is finished, i will just wait for things to go wrong as they normally do :D

Aye Paul I have had a few Land Rovers, I work in a garage and when one comes in part ex i cannt resist and end up buying it ;)

I bought this one when a bloke came into our workshop he was looking for a scrap yard to take it too and i could not resist.

LOL, yeah, we understand ...

.. and I don't think I could stand the temptation .. ;)

Crikey Dave - yu still on here? Havent seen yu for, erm, years.

hows it going?

Now then!

Lerk on here everyday whilst i am meant to be working, but i think the last time we spoke i had just bought my P38 so not been over this side for a while.

The temptation working in a dealership kills me sometimes. Nearly bought a Freelander the other week, TD4 with 76k on the clock and a load of black smoke for only £400 quid but i am running out of space :D

As this one is nearly "finished" the V8 bug is biting again.

I saw my old V8 Disco at Driffield the other day and miss it terribly. If anyone knows who owns R*** BDU tell them to give me a shout. Surely they must be on here!
