A good friend of my wifes has a SWB Wreg 1.8 Freelander,

She is looking to replace the car as its cost her a fortune over 12months and she wants a newer FL. Now she says fortune but I have spent a lot more on my V8 Jeep in the last few months but its all reliative I guess.

I enquired into it as I thought I maybe able to make a few £££ on it and offer her more that she has been offered in PX.

PX she has been offered around £500.

My concern is that the rear prop is out, I know the ins and outs about the reasons for removing the prop and if I offered her £600 / £650 I dont want to be spending hundreds on it.

So my question is:

W reg
1.8 petrol with 86k
OK condition but not great
IRD / VCU problems so only front wheel drive
Service history
Very short MOT / Tax (a month).

Is it worth a risk and what do you think it is worth if spruced up, MOT'd (not taxed) and put up for sale a 2WD.

I have been out of Landies for a while so not sure myself.

Thanks for any advice.

James

I would say that with a new MOT and running correctly (no HG issues) it has to be worth £1k plus. Just been offered £950.00 for my "Y" reg in PX but reckon she worth more like late teens in reality.

You can fix the IRD and VCU issue over time, it runs fine in 2wd just don't drop the clutch on wet junctions or expect it to get you up Everest in the snow ;).

Bell Engineering are the guys I would reccomend for transmission parts, they do very fairly priced reconditioned parts :).

I'd say go for it at that pirce!!

Not an expert but I'm guessing most people looking at Freelanders are looking because they are 4wd. Having said that a spruced up nice looker will still probably go for about a £1000 on ebay, just because they look good 4wd or not.

Yup, some peps just likes the look of them - after all you can buy a 2wd FL2 and nobody can tell the difference!

Don't most of us drop the prop fer the Summer anyway?

Now this is purely speculation, but the SD4 FL2's and Pukevoques would have TC designed for 2wd, whereas a neutured FL1 still thinks it's 4wd. Might that be an issue?

well i dont know if this is relevant but iv got a 52 plate 3dr with body kit 96k and good service history, i swapped my 54 plate vectra, which i valued at £1800, with a trader, he went on to sell my vectra for £1100.

so did i get a good deal or did the trader?

Not keen on the Evoque then?!:) It's good that you can buy a 2WD version if you like the look and most peps don't need 4WD, so why pay for it? The FL1 is still a good little motor as a 2WD and IMO it drives better on the road, (except in extreme conditions)!

Errr not to bad at all to be honest.

Had a couple of niggles but nothing like the heart ache the P38 caused me.

Granted the P38 has more of a sense of occasion, but the Jeep has power by the bucket load.

That's good to know. I have seriously considered the Cherokee and the Grand C, both have lockable centre diffs - I believe.

Anyhoo, good luck with the Feaby, hope you make a few sheckles on it:)

Give or take a few quid yes you did if it's diesel. If not then its about fair on both sides imo.
