Is the Rover 75 Gearbox the same as the Freelander

Hi all

Not new to owning a Landrover (Range Rover) but might be new to owning a Freelander but need some advice before making a purchase.

I have the opportunity to buy a 3dr 51 plate 2.5 V6 Freelander with full leather and all the trimmings, i.e extra fog lights, body kit, hard and soft top, roll bars with a fairly low mileage of 67000 miles and in excellent condition. However, it has a gearbox fault, still drives but occasionally sticks and will more than likely need a new gearbox.

The guy selling doesn't have the money to fix it up but we do (within la limit) and I quite like the idea of having the back off during the hotter days and quite frankly could do with another 4x4 as want to take our rangie off the road to put a new engine in it.

Anyway, I digress.......I know the V6 Freelander has a Rover 75 engine, but does it have the same auto gearbox? I can get hold of Rover 75 gearboxes but V6 Freelander ones seem few and far between unless I want to fork out £1000 for a new one?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks for replying, so the gearboxes are the same as a Rover 75 then?

We weren't actively looking for a Freelander, just this one had cropped up and it would be a little project and then something to use whilst the Range Rover is off the road.

Yeah from what i've read the diesels are the ones to have but didn't think the V6's were that bad!! I've driven a 3dr 1.8.........never again.......awful!!

I think all Landrovers are a time-bomb waiting to happen but still can't get rid of mine, it's like a drug!!

It is (I think) fairly cheap so maybe worth a shot but with the rangie playing up too I don't fancy 2 crocked landrovers on the drive, especially as the whole purpose of looking for another smaller 4x4 was to tow a trailer with a new engine on it for the rangie and just be a smaller but similar car to have whilst the rangie is off the road! We have another car, a sporty hot hatch which obviously won't tow jack!!
