Is my timing out or could my manifold be buggered??

Serviced the wagon a few days ago and renewed the points, condensor coil etc. Timed the ignition by ear and on checking with strobe it's between 6 and 3 degrees btdc. Left the vehicle running whilst checking the lights and electrics as the mot needs doing. Vehicle started to sound lumpy to say the least. This was after about 15 mins of sitting at warm. Revving the engine it virtually dies and sounds throaty. Short while later it got worse then died. Then ran on for a few seconds. Wouldn't re start til it had cooled right down. When I restarted the same happened. I can't see anything visible with the manifold like a crack, but the bolts look like they'd snap if I tried to get em off. Any easy way of testing? Or any other suggestions? Cheers.

It's a swb 2.25 petrol. Didn't over heat and when I checked the timing it was still as I set it.

Might be dodgy copasitor
Could be breaking down when heating up
Don't think it would be anything to do with exhust manifold seeing as you only serviced it
Gonna be something you changed

....or coil. Swap them back to the originals one at a time until you've found the dodgy bit. New parts do fail and tend to fail early in their life or quite a long time after.

Hi all. I got the parts from Simon bbc. I was going to try electric but thought I'd get it through the mot first. Put all the old bits back on and it's still doing the same. The only reason I was thinking it could be the fanny mould. Is because it only starts playing up when hot. So was thinking a crack or similar but just not sure how to check without taking it off. Also this may seem really stupid, but I don't remember the area round the carb getting real hot before. When I operate the throttle linkage on the carb it's bloody boiling. Never really noticed it before. :) hence why I thought my ignition timing could be out. Buggered if I can work this out. Anyone near Harlow who wants to earn some beer tokens and try to work this out let me know! I'll pay for lots of beer if needed!

If the carb is getting really hot it could be causing fuel delivery problems as in fuel evaporating or vaperising to fast so not entering the cylinders
Isn't there a heat sink or heat sheld between the 2 manifolds ??

Do you know what Pobby, there wasnt a heat shield fitted!, I had a dig around and found it under the passenger seat with loads of other bits the previous owner had stashed in there. I reckon this could be the reason as the air around the carb was too much for my fingers to bear, so god knows what it was doing to the fuel! No bolts with the shield, so have to work out what size I need to fit it. Can only find 2 holes on the manifold, tho and there are 3 on the shield.? Hopefully this will sort it out. Cheers pobby

It might be you've knocked the timing out when changing the points and it's running hot 'cos it's advanced - is the engine temp gauge reading any higher than before you fitted the new parts?

in between the exhaust manifold and the inlet is a hot spot, this can fracture and allow exhaust to leak into the inlet, thie will cause your problem

The timings still set at 6/5 degrees btdc oxides, and the temp is still sitting in the middle of the temp gauge. Although I have a kenlowe fitted so it kicks in to keep it there. I'm pretty sure the timings ok but I'm still a bit of a novice :) definitely hot there. Just had to patch up some of the starter cable insulation which had bubbled and melted! Battery's flat now as I can't take it for a drive due to no mot. :(

try riching the mixture up a bit you may find it runs a lot cooler....I lean mine up a half a turn on cold days to keep me toes warm! A colourtune plug is worth buying or borrowing as I discovered I had manifold leak when I tried one....luckily managed to fix it by reseating the carb on the manifold adaptor plate.

Hi,

So I had exactly the same on mine, but actually it gave me a scare. I'd had it doing this for a couple of months and not paid too much attention until I was just looking under the bonnet to try to understand why and I noticed a dribble of petrol coming out of where one of the rods enters the body. It was getting hot, the body expanding, and petrol was dropping onto the manifold. Goodness knows how it hadnt gone up in flames. Not saying this is what happens with yours but worth checking. 1 new carb later and that symptom is no more.

Although I have another I'm about to post about!
