Is my td5 immobiliser working?

Hi, My 1999 td5 has a factory fit alarm/immobiliser, but I don't think it does what it's supposed to. When I press the fob, it sounds the horn twice?? If you get in nothing happens, even though there is a little sensor looking thing over the drivers door. If you lift the bonnet the horn sounds and apparently if you try starting it without a key. When you blip the fob for 'off' it flashes the indicators.

Should it be passive and linked to the doors opening? Should the horn really sound twice - not great for neighbours at night.

I'd appreciate knowing how other people's alarm/immobiliser works.

If it's not working properly do you think I could take it to an alarm place and get it fixed? And are they any good if and when working or is it better to get a third party alarm fitted.
Having just had my last landy pinched, I'm a bit paranoid, so want to at least get the alarm working properly (or a good replacement) plus disklock.
Really crap that you have to worry about it being stolen all the time, rather than enjoying it... anyhow, as usual, thanks for any advice.
Cheers
Andy

the 2 sounds of the horn are to tell you that you have a mislock. One of the doors or the bonnet is not shut properly or has a faulty switch.

The alarm is a separate unit to the immobilisor which is part of the ECU.

On mine when I arm the alarm with the plip the indicators flash three times with no audible and the immobilisor lamp on the speedo flashes constantly. If I open any of the doors or something is sensed by the volumetric sensor the alarm sounds both the horn and the siren.

When I disarm the indicators flash once and the imobilisor lamp flashes for 30 seconds or until the plip proximity sensor finds the fob in which case it glows permanent until I start the engine.

If I dont arm the alarm with the fob the immobilisor auto operates after about a minute (flashing red lamp on speedo) but the alarm is not armed and I can open the doors all day long. Good for when the dog is left in the motor.

If something is not right as Ratty says the horn beeps twice. I dont have central locking fitted.

Thanks Guys - I'm much clearer now about how it should work - think it will have to go in somewhere to be looked at.

to put alarm into force mode( to allow you to check its functionality) do the following

1; open bonnet
2; wind drivers window down
3; place keys in ignition but dont turn it on
4; hold down bonnet switch for at least 5 secs
5; release bonnet switch & straight away turn ignition on
6; open drivers door & turn ignition off then on & the horn should sound once (if not you've either cocked up the process or there's a problem with the drivers door switch/wire)
7; as soon as the horn has sounded once shut the door and it should then sound twice.
8; open each door separately now and the hazards should flash once each time you do. if one doesnt flash that is where your 'mislock' is occurring.
9; to check the interior sensor, get in the drivers seat, shut the door & press the 'unlock' button on the fob. the sensor should be able to sense you moving back & forwards in your seat & the hazards will flash every time it senses movement.
10; to end force mode simply turn the ignition off.

hope this helps:)

Turns out that despite the £40 diagnostic, it was, as suggested - a door open/not closed. The rear door switch has nothing to push it shut... taped it in until i can find a bracket or something! What a great result - no noisey horn going off every time i set it - just 3 flashes of lights and indicators. Some things are disproportionate to the amount of satisfaction that they bring and this is one of them - dead chuffed!

If yer tape starts coming off just pull the wire of the back of the pin.;)
