1984 2.5N/A 90. Noticed its lost a bit of top end speed ..down from 60mph to 50-55mph.

I'm not too good at describing noises but here goes...from the gearbox area as im driving it seems to have an uneven whirring sound until it gets to a cruising speed, then it sits fine. There is slightly more vibration than normal but no kangarooing and the engine is still sweet..just seems to be struggling to transfer the power evenly.

I've changed the diff oil and the gearbox oil..no help. I am now wondering whether to change the prop and uj's...??

Any ideas??

Mate take ya rear prop off (Engage diff lock) go for spin and if theres no noise replace your UJ's first (Cheaper than new prop and more of a posiblity)

If the noise is still there when the rear prop is off put it back on and take the front off and repeat

If noise is still there after trying front and rear props off then you know your problem lies elsewhere!

Worth a try dude ;)

Could try wheel bearings a knackered one could be causing the brakes to bind. Get under it and give everything a good wiggle to check for slack. If your uj's are worn check the centre sliding bit for wear I bought 2 uj's for mine only to find my prop could be bent in the middle.

i had exactly same problem on my defender. drove ****y and had a noise when i let off the revs at about 40 onwards. uj's felt ok but it turned out to be the actual prop at fault, changed it with a second hand 1 with new uj's fitted. drives like new now
