Is it the vanos?

Hey guys.
So been reading up on google and watching clips on YouTube and just wondering could my cold start rattling be down to the vanos? There is also a slight knocking on the right side of the engine.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace this?

Cheers

Car has 150k but still as smooth as ever. Only prob with the engine is the rattle on cold start that lasts for about a second then clears. A faint knocking can be heard from the right side of the engine while running.
It's a 2004 4.4 recently serviced

Vanos rattle is normally likened to marbles in a tin for the first few seconds until oil pressure has been created.

Basically there are some crummy seals which fail with age and allow the oil pressure to leak of so when the engine stars there is no lubrication around the Vanos gears. Not always terminal and they can sound awful for ages before any real problems occur.

Are a couple of sites I've looked at in the past, although knocking will not be caused by Vanos issues.

That's for that. I have just spoken to Brownchurch in Leytonstone and they have quoted me £400 just to strip it down and look at it. A tad excessive if you ask me

I would explore the solenoid seal replacement if you can get the bits as it can often solve the rattle. It's an easy job apparently.

Replacing the seals is fairly straight forward, just don't kink the seal as it has to be folded to get it in....locking the system down and getting the VANOS unit off is the fun part!!

I did have some links to the VANOS re-seal process somewhere...

Following advice on this forum, I changed the (garage supplied) oil for the correctly specified Unipart grade also fitting a Land Rover filter.
The start up rattle, which had been particularly noticeable after a few hours parked, vanished and the engine has been quiet on start up ever since.

Oh really. What grade oil did you use?

The noise I get is what I can only explain as the tappets banging without oil and this literally happens for a second then it sounds like the oil reaches them and it's quiet.

I had the very faintest of rumble with mine on start up.
oil and filter change done and all well.

Mobil 1 +LR filter.

Thanks Saint.V8

Herald everyone I know uses them or LLR in charlton.

Had a bit more of an investigation with this. Got someone to start it while I stuck my head under the bonnet. I can definitely say it is not the tappets. The sound comes from the top, front right of the engine and sounds more like a chain slap. After the initial noise there is a faint knocking/tapping from the same area.
Sound familiar to anyone?

Cheers
