Hi all.

I was driving back from work earlier in my TD5 as a pipe had burst and the family couldn't find the stop valve so I put my foot down to get back. My heater wouldn't turn on and as I pulled up the engine light came on, so I switched it off and tried to restart. And it won't start. Lifted the bonnet and water has sprayed from the coolant bleed screw. And the hose was hard. Took the cap off the filler bottle and loads of steam ****ed out. Checked the engine loom for oil and that was fine..... Do I need to start looking for a new head?:(

Uh-Oh. Have you been keeping an eye on your hoses since last time?:(

Yea kept a close eye on everything because I couldn't afford something like this... The temp. Gauge didn't go above half n it didn't loose power before i turned it off and the oil level hasn't changed... Any ideas other than my worst nightmare?

It could be summit simple but until it's been bled and run up to temp you're not going to know for sure.

Is the bleed screw snapped, loose or missing?

Bleed screw was loose but still there. Problem is it won't start now. Just spins over... :(

If it turns over and your oil level is OK, the only question is when did you last check on your coolant level?

Check that you have not got a leaky core plug by filling the system and then checking for leaks.

Hopefully, it will fire up, and if you leave the filler cap off, you will be able to tell if it is being over-pressurised as it would blow water out. That could indicate a blown head gasket, which is a simple enough job to replace.

Its ever so slightly down on oil but I have a leaky drain plug so that might explain that and I checked the coolant level the day before and was ok. Tried turning it over just then and the engine warning light now goes out after its self test and when turning over the oil pressure light goes out like usual. But still won't start. I'll check the core plug tomorrow.

Thing is I had no loss of power or any other signs. Simply heater motor stops working, 10 seconds later engine light, and now won't start. I didn't think hgf could be that quick...

Have you checked all your fuses? Pull them one at a time, clean and reseat them with a little vaseline. Does your immobilisor light go out when cranking? Have you got fuel pressure (ie is the pump running)? Check the crank position semsor is plugged in (top of bell housing). Check the injector loom connector has not come loose (front of head underneath the cam carrier). Clean up the main ECU earth. Anything else not working apart from the heater motor?

This sounds electrical to me rather than mechanical.

If you can't hear the pump running when you switch the ignition on, it probably isn't working. Mine runs loud enough to hear when the ignition is switched on. As previously stated, check the fuses and the immobiliser, but if the immobiliser is like mine, it won't even turn over if it's not been switched off.

Is there any smoke from the exhaust when it's cranking over?

Can you hear the fuel pump orime when you turn the ignition on?

Give the inertia switch in the engine bay a quick press just to make sure that you haven't jolted it and caused it to trip.

No smoke from exhaust. I can hear the fuel pump. Immobiliser is disabled. And I thought the inertia switch stopped it cranking over aswell?

No. Inertia switch (fuel cut off switch) only does the fuel. I take it that you have plenty of fuel in it?

Does the engine sound normal when cranking over or is it making a strange noise?

Haha yea plenty of fuel in it. Inertia switch reset and no strange noises when turning over... I'm gonna be out the country for 2 weeks so gonna have to wait to get stuck in to it...

Well finally got it sorted. Been incredibly busy with work so not much time to get stuck in. Checked quite a lot, replaced a load of things, turns out it was the crankshaft position sensor. Managed to get a lot of other things sorted whilst I was at it so not all bad :)
