Hi All,

I will be buying a defender soon, so looking for potential insurance companies etc.

Could anyone be kind enough to suggest if these would be 'modifications' as such, and therefore need to be declared to the insurers?

Bulkhead removal bar
Mudd rails or the Exmoor equivalent
Smaller steering wheel, aka black motolita
cubby box instead of centre seat
CB radio
Rear wheel carrier.

I cant see why these would be classed as a propper mod, but will Mr Flux and Mr Lancaster agree?

Ta!!

Cheers!!

I was using an internet quote page which didnt have many options, I think I will call them (Lancaster)

Also, is Adrian Flux a hater of the north east? £725 for a 1996 defender with 235 wheels, and nothing else modified!! Lancaster is £340!!!

I am getting the idea they are cheaper if you phone any of these companies, unlike normal online companies. That will keep me busy tomorrow!

both of mine are covered by flux. You can get full UK and euro recovery for £52 ontop of your policy to... that includes a tow home :) priceless when your in the south of Spain!

Might be a bit late for you now but I'd give NFU a punt, cheapest for me and good sevice for 10 years, they also come top of some insurance polls.

Nope, not too late, but my local NFU poffice are terrible!!! They told me that a 300tdi was not standard and therefore was a severe modification!!!

I will try a different office I think, that one was a bit daft!!!

My local NFU took 3 weeks to decide that my disco was too modified for them - by which time i had insured it with Flux

I dont understand it, some people on here find NFU and Flux great, I found both to be **** takers, esp Flux at £725!!

I havent called flux yet so will do that, and will try a few other NFUs!!

I dont consider the list of things I put on the first post to be extreme or over the top, infact, I dont see them beiong a mod (unless adding an air freshener is a mod!!) flux dont agree!!

Hey ho, will have to try a few more soon!!

I became a 110 TD5 Defender owner recently and went through all this. For a third car with zero no claims and a few mods I found Glynwood got me the best price, although I'm on a low mileage policy. I'm not on commission, they did just give me the best deal:

Glynwood Insurance Brokers

Make sure you mention all of the mods *on the phone* when getting the quote though.

Before I found Glynnwood I had one well advertised broker quote me a good price, I went with them and then the insurer wouldn't cover the mods when I returned all the paperwork. I then got a next best quote from the broker for £600 - nearly double. When I turned that down I was told I had to pay hefty cancellation fees!

I'd mentioned the mods on the phone and had to get them to check their own phone records. They refunded all my money in the end but I didn't even get an apology. If I'd not mentioned just one mod the insurer didn't like, I would have copped for a big bill and ended up with no insurance.

I luv my 110 tho'...!

My current car is a Vx omega with a full irmischer body kit and this is classed as a mod by many insurance co but AF class it as a standard factory fit and the insurance for that is only £292 compared with others that start at £700. I've been well happy withj AF for 3 years now.

I have tried flux, but they just really dont like me, their quote was double that of lancasters!!

A smaller steering wheel can affect the handling so they say.... it's also a get out clause for tyhe insurance co if you don't declare everything including how many times you fart....

it doesn't matter a fleas fart what you thing are mods and what are not, it's what the insurers think that count. online quotes are crap because you will end up paying more when you have to phone em up to arrange cover anyway and lancaster are one of the worse. if you go with them make sure you don't sell the car part way through the policy. i did and ended up with a solicitor getting them to cancel the policy. they wanted proof that i had sold the car or a copy of the policy i was switching to for the car i sold. thats when i asked if they thought i was a liar and asked to speak to a supervisor, got cut off. 2 days later i got a nasty letter for being abusive. phoned em back and asked for a copy of the taped conversation for my solicitor as i was seeking legal advice. they will not release the tapes to anyone. solicitor called em (me cousin). policy cancelled, full written apoligyand a promise that i would get no junk mail or flyers off em. 1 week later the pricks sent out a customer satisfaction form:D
